The most notable change in 2011 relates to the additions recognised in relation to the performance
of wind projects in Mexico, India and Poland and solar thermal facilities in Spain, all of which are
in the Energy division.
The main additions in 2010 relate principally to the organic growth of the Energy division,
especially solar thermal plants, and the development of wind power projects, predominantly in
Mexico and Australia. Also worthy of note was the addition of two new vessels to Compañía
Trasmediterránea’s fleet, which are recognised under “Other Plant and Machinery”.
At 31 December 2011, EUR 93,959 thousand of property, plant and equipment had been
classified under “Non-Current Assets Classified as Held for Sale” and related mainly to vessels
belonging to the Compañía Trasmediterránea Subgroup (31 December 2010: EUR 88,942
thousand) (see Note 24).
“Other Changes” includes the positive effect of translation differences in 2010 for an amount of
EUR 37 million (2010: EUR 204 million).
“Other Plant” consists mainly of vessels belonging to the Compañía Trasmediterránea Subgroup,
with a gross cost of EUR 728 million.
"Advances and Property, Plant and Equipment in the Course of Construction" includes mainly the
costs of developing and constructing certain wind farms located in the US, Mexico, Poland and
Italy and a solar thermal facility in Spain which have not yet come into service.
In 2011 the Group companies capitalised to property, plant and equipment finance costs
amounting to EUR 34 million (31 December 2010: EUR 54 million).
Fully depreciated property, plant and equipment in use at 31 December 2011 and 2010 amounted
to EUR 332 million and EUR 352 million, respectively; most of these assets are currently in use.
