The town-meeting usually specitled the kind <strong>of</strong> property to be<br />

taxed. Tluis the wolf bounty was raised from a tax upon '' all sorts<br />

<strong>of</strong> cattell," which included horses. The tax for Mr. Moxon's main-<br />

tenance, in 1G47, had been raised upon " all l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> goods." Coop-<br />

er's meeting-house debt was met <strong>by</strong> a tax upon "• upl<strong>and</strong>s (meddows<br />

excepted) <strong>and</strong> living stock." A special committee made out the val-<br />

uation <strong>and</strong> assessment. Wheat was accepted for taxes at on. lOd.<br />

per bushel. Indian corn at 2s. GcZ. <strong>and</strong> peas at 3cL per bushel.<br />

The tax for the £30 due ]Mr. Pynchon '' for y'' i)urchas <strong>of</strong><br />

y" l<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> y*" Plantation <strong>of</strong> ye Indians " was rated "wholly on<br />

l<strong>and</strong>s." The latter list is here given in full as it furnishes the names<br />

<strong>and</strong> lauded importance <strong>of</strong> the settlers at the opening <strong>of</strong> the year 1647.<br />

There were then forty-two lot-owners <strong>and</strong> six vacant lots, some <strong>of</strong><br />

them having been bought back <strong>by</strong> the town. We miss the names<br />

<strong>of</strong> Jehu Burr, John Cable, John Woodcock, <strong>and</strong> others <strong>of</strong> the first<br />

settlers. These men drifted to the Connecticut plantations, <strong>and</strong> were<br />

frequent parties iu lawsuits for some ^^ears thereafter. The list is<br />
