From the latter place he was removed, Jnne 10, <strong>and</strong>, with many other<br />

Union <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> like rank, placed nnder the fire <strong>of</strong> Federal l)atteries<br />

at Charleston, S.C. Being exchanged, on the 2d <strong>of</strong> August, 1864,<br />

Old Ely Tavern <strong>and</strong> Iji.ake Homestead, Dwight Street.<br />

he went North on a mouth's furlough, but returned to Fortress IMonroe<br />

in time to intercept his regiment, then under orders for North Carolina,<br />

<strong>and</strong> procured the return to Massachusetts <strong>of</strong> those whose time was<br />

about to expire. He was mustered out <strong>of</strong> service with them, Septem-<br />

ber 27, 1864, <strong>and</strong> for meritorious service received a well-deserved<br />

brevet <strong>of</strong> brigadier-general, dating from March 13, 1865. He then<br />

served four years in the Boston Custom-house, <strong>and</strong> twelve years as
