zone 1<br />
back of right leg<br />
Look and feel for circula<strong>to</strong>ry changes,<br />
fluid retention and a<strong>to</strong>pic dermatitis.<br />
Evidence of varicose veins and capillary<br />
damage may be obvious on <strong>the</strong> backs<br />
of <strong>the</strong> legs. Be advised that this may<br />
contraindicate certain treatments and<br />
applied pressure. Changes <strong>to</strong> circulation<br />
and fluid accumulation may contribute<br />
<strong>to</strong> cellulite conditions. Both circula<strong>to</strong>ry<br />
changes and fluid retention may be<br />
attributed <strong>to</strong> standing for long periods<br />
of time or a sedentary lifestyle. Toxic<br />
accumulation due <strong>to</strong> diet and lack<br />
of exercise may also be considered.<br />
Inflamma<strong>to</strong>ry skin conditions, such as<br />
a<strong>to</strong>pic dermatitis may develop behind<br />
<strong>the</strong> knees and be red and itchy.<br />
zone 2<br />

zone 3<br />
lower back and but<strong>to</strong>cks<br />
Toxic accumulation, breakouts on<br />
but<strong>to</strong>cks, sciatica, muscular stress in <strong>the</strong><br />
lower back, fluid retention around <strong>the</strong><br />
sacrum and stretch marks.<br />
Check elimination processes, diet and<br />
exercise patterns. Pre-menstrual women<br />
may develop fluid retention around<br />
<strong>the</strong> sacrum area causing sensitivity <strong>to</strong><br />
pressure and lower back discomfort.<br />
Spinal alignment in <strong>the</strong> lower back may<br />
cause sciatica and muscular tension.<br />
Stretch marks may be <strong>the</strong> result of<br />
weight fluctuations or pregnancy.<br />
zone 4<br />
upper back and shoulders<br />
Changes in spinal and postural alignment<br />
and muscular tension.<br />
Look for acne breakouts and sun<br />
damage. Both muscular tension and<br />
acne breakouts may be due <strong>to</strong> stress.<br />
Assess stress levels and posture at work.<br />
Acne may be <strong>the</strong> result of friction from<br />
syn<strong>the</strong>tic or tight clothing. Sun damage<br />
may be present as pigmentation changes<br />
and/or skin lesions develop. Moni<strong>to</strong>r<br />
and record changes <strong>to</strong> moles and<br />
pre-cancerous lesions (this may apply<br />
<strong>to</strong> all zones). Zone 4 can link <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> lung<br />
region, so check respira<strong>to</strong>ry function.<br />
zone 5<br />

Check for skin disorders such as<br />
kera<strong>to</strong>sis pilaris, a<strong>to</strong>pic dermatitis and<br />
psoriasis.<br />
Skin may also be dry or show signs of<br />
sun damage. Muscle <strong>to</strong>ne may be poor.<br />
Skin conditions may be due <strong>to</strong> diet and<br />
deficiencies. Assess vitamin intake and<br />
whe<strong>the</strong>r your client supplements his/<br />
her diet. Stress may prompt outbreaks<br />
of a<strong>to</strong>pic dermatitis or psoriasis.<br />
Accumulation of uric acid in <strong>the</strong> body<br />
may also cause roughness of <strong>the</strong> skin<br />
tissue – check water consumption.<br />
zone 6<br />

Same as Zone 5.<br />
zone 7<br />
left foot<br />
Look for tissue and color changes,<br />
fluid retention and viral/fungal infections.<br />
The feet can indicate postural<br />
alignment and changes <strong>to</strong> circulation<br />
and lymphatics. Check with your<br />
client as <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> type of job and form of<br />
exercise he/she does, as this may be <strong>the</strong><br />
reason for excessive skin build-up on<br />
<strong>the</strong> feet. Infections may be due <strong>to</strong> poor<br />
aeration of <strong>the</strong> feet or not drying properly<br />
between <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>es. In some instances,<br />
this may also be <strong>the</strong> result of poor<br />
elimination processes. If you are familiar<br />
with reflexology, use this as a guide<br />
<strong>to</strong> understanding a little more about<br />
your client.<br />
zone 8<br />

Look and feel for dry skin, ingrown hairs<br />
and circulation changes.<br />
Toxic accumulation may be evident on<br />
upper thighs. Product use, including<br />
alkaline soaps and depila<strong>to</strong>ry creams<br />
may result in dry, itchy skin conditions.<br />
Check water consumption and diet,<br />
which may contribute <strong>to</strong> dehydration.<br />
Regular body exfoliation may help with<br />
ingrown hairs. Waxing may have caused<br />
post-inflamma<strong>to</strong>ry pigmentation and<br />
sensitized skin. Kera<strong>to</strong>sis pilaris may<br />
manifest on <strong>the</strong> upper thighs if <strong>the</strong> skin<br />
is dry.<br />
zone 9<br />
