1.1 Importance of Surface Currents Besides wa-, of all the oceanographic parameters that may dect o&ihore oper- ations, currents are by far the mmt important (Hodgins [9]). Besides being driven by gemtropic forces and tides, they are strongly idueneed by the local surface wind and wave fields. Currents near the surf- are t he which are associated with the mixed layer of the ocean. On the Grand Banks reeon off Newfoundland, for example, this layer ranges in depth kom 25 to 100 metres helm the ocean surface. Since currents in thip Layer are responsible for the transportstion of any materials in the layer, being able to measure them is of great importance in the management of coastal area. The following are a few examples of the use of this type of information. . TYaddng of oil and other dce-borne poliutantts may he more easily performed. . The data can he used by rd-time ice and iceberg drift prediction models. . Search and -cue teams can me the data to estimate the trajectory of a drifting vessel. The safe transfer of people and equipment at sea should be performed when svrfhce current conditions are ideal, such as when net current Bows me small. . A hmledge of local surf- current velocities is wential for the safe mooring of Boating structures. . Predictive models for extreme currents rely on Long-term time series measure ments. A database for these measmements, both spatially and temporally, can now he developed.
