5.4 Discussion<br />

The redid components estimated from the vector current algorithm, ming simulated<br />

and actual data, strongly agree with the drifter wmpvted dimaten. The standard<br />

deviations are within the lmown errors <strong>of</strong> both techniques and the results are well<br />

correlated.<br />

The redid components computed from the direct radar estimate and the -ti-<br />

mate from the vector current algorithm correspond well with the drifter computed<br />

estimate. The standard deviations are within the knom ermis <strong>of</strong> both techniques<br />

and the resuits are well correlated.<br />

Even though the tangential component estimates were highly correlated using<br />

simulated data, they were not very well correlated using the actual data with, at<br />

<strong>be</strong>st, <strong>only</strong> 55% <strong>of</strong> the variability in the mmparison explained by the regression. This<br />

<strong>may</strong> <strong>be</strong> due to extreme variability in the current field in the regions <strong>of</strong> interest (Petrie<br />

and Anderson [48j) or to b e d m errors. The latter pmibiity was discussed in<br />

the previous section. If <strong>be</strong>amforming problems did exist they were unknown during<br />

the experiment, with the exception <strong>of</strong> the major hardware problems noted durlng the<br />

later phs~er <strong>of</strong> the exe~cise. Since <strong>be</strong>am integrity is critical for the adequate testing<br />
