Quite a number of individual effortr were requLed to make thb small contribution
to the engineering mmmunity pmsihle.
I would &st Ue to thank the l od investment community who pmvided the
funding to develop the Cape Race radar faeilityvia Northem Fads Systems Limited.
Without this hacking, the wrk presented here would not he pmible.
I wo?lld, semndly, like to thank the engineers who designed, bufit and managed
the development of the radar system. These individusls indude Dr. Rafaat Khan
who designed the radar waveform and the signal proesing chain. Bob Davis and Dr.
Saoudy Saoudy who designed the antenna system, Fabian Hartery who paimtalungiy
maintained it. Bdan Gamberg and Wayne Pearwn who wrote the system software,
and Barry Dave for his patient management of the project.
Dr. Jim Helhig of the Department of Fisheries and Ocem. who supervised the
experiment and processed the drifter data, is gmtefully admmledged an weU an the
captain and mew of the HMCS Skeem who deployed the buoys.
I would also iike to t hd the system m anw of Memorial's central mmputing
facilih: Randy Dodge, who gave me access M the VAXfVMS system for s ohe
development purpaee4 This wa made increasingly difficult as this system, which
contained all the pro-ing software used to generate the early results from thb
thesis, was no bngez being supported by the university during the period in early
1995 when the VAX/VMS system wa~ being replaced by a UNM platform.
Upon my departure fmm CCORe in late 1995, the data and software fmm the
VAX system was transferred to the computing fadity at the engineering faculty.
Therefore, I wuld Ue to thank Dave PCP, thesystem manager of the Faculty of En-
gineering's mmputimg facility, for helping me with the transition from the VAX/VMS
platform to a UNIX system. This was a slow pm- since the Qe and software for-
