Chapter 2 Technique 2.1 Introduction The radar coverage zone he partitioned into a polar grid of radar scattering cells, eaeh of which 1s specified by the radar's range and azimuthal mlution. A HF Doppler spectrum from each of these ceb is charmterized by two dominant pe& spaced symmetrically about the carrier. The frequencies of these peeks are used by all HF GWRwtems for the m-uement of ocean surface m t s since they indirectly trace the underlying average surfme -rent component. These camponents, or radial current projections, can hs estimated for all eeUs in the radar ewerage zone to yeld a grid d the radial current field. How these datagrids are generated will be discussed m the following sections. For the estimation of wetor currents, a technique will he presented which as- sumes that the current is uniform about the estimation point. In this ease adjacent azimuthal radial current components will he different projections of this mrrent. A geometric linear equation describes this relationship for one radar cell. A bet of these equations can be generated for dl cells which fall within the assumed uniform c mnt ream. These equations can then he subjected to a linear regression analysis to yield an estimate of the vector current components.
