development <strong>in</strong>terventions, which may <strong>in</strong>clude development <strong>of</strong> tailored f<strong>in</strong>ancial products and/or<br />

broker<strong>in</strong>g with f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>stitutions and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Box 2- What is <strong>sanitation</strong>?<br />

Sanitation can be def<strong>in</strong>ed as <strong>the</strong> methods <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> safe and susta<strong>in</strong>able management <strong>of</strong> human<br />

excreta, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> collection, storage, treatment and disposal <strong>of</strong> faeces and ur<strong>in</strong>e. To achieve this<br />

objective, a series <strong>of</strong> services need to be provided alongside <strong>the</strong> “<strong>sanitation</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong>”, as shown<br />

on Figure 1 and detailed below.<br />

Demand promotion. Demand <strong>for</strong> <strong>sanitation</strong> is <strong>of</strong>ten low. Interventions to <strong>in</strong>crease household and<br />

community demand <strong>for</strong> <strong>sanitation</strong> typically <strong>in</strong>clude promotion <strong>of</strong> <strong>sanitation</strong> <strong>in</strong> general, market<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

specific <strong>sanitation</strong> products, hygiene promotion, social development and mobilization and community<br />

trigger<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Collection / access. Human waste needs to be collected and separated from human contact.<br />

Collect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> waste can be done ei<strong>the</strong>r through on-site <strong>sanitation</strong> solutions (whereby excreta are<br />

collected, stored and sometimes treated close to <strong>the</strong> toilet) and <strong>of</strong>f-site systems, where excreta are<br />

removed from <strong>the</strong> plot, most commonly via waterborne sewerage. In general, as density <strong>in</strong>creases,<br />

networked systems are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly cost-effective compared to on-site <strong>sanitation</strong> solutions. Specific<br />

services need to be provided to collect <strong>the</strong> wastes not only from people’s homes but also from public<br />

spaces (railway stations, markets, etc.), work places and schools.<br />

Transport. When latr<strong>in</strong>es fill up <strong>the</strong>y need to be moved or emptied, while latr<strong>in</strong>es connected to<br />
