Southern Lakes
Time to Explore
Johnsons Crossing
A high bridge spans the Teslin River, a
place where many paddlers start canoe trips
down the Teslin to the Yukon River. Just to
the east of the bridge is the junction with
the South Canol Road (limited facilities and
not recommended for large motorhomes),
beckoning travellers with a circle-route
opportunity through the scenery of the
Campbell region. Alaska Highway #1
Km 1296.
Carcross Desert
Venture into the “world’s smallest desert,”
comprised of sandy hillsides that formed
a glacial lake bed. Explore the dunes and
their fascinating ecology. You’ll spot some
of the unique plants that survive in this
arid and windy environment. South
Klondike Highway #2 Km 107.
Water, Water Everywhere
With over 600 km of scenic interconnected
lakes weaving through the region, a trip onto
Southern Lakes waterways gives you that
Larger Than Life experience. Boat launches
are found at campgrounds and marinas
throughout the region, and sandy beaches
are located at Bennett (Carcross), Marsh
(Army Beach*), Tagish (California Beach*)
and Kookatsoon lakes. Local operators offer
charters, boat rentals, fishing, wildlife
viewing, guiding and other services. If you
have your own boat, check conditions before
you go. Remember that these glacier-fed
lakes are extremely cold and conditions
can change quickly.
