Kathleen Lake
Bring a canoe, enjoy a picnic on the
beach or, better yet, camp overnight at
the Kathleen Lake Campground in Kluane
National Park and Reserve. Boardwalks,
benches, trails, a pebble beach and
lakefront shelter make Kathleen Lake
accessible for all kinds of activities, but
the stunning view and azure waters are
what most people remember. Km 219
on the Haines Road #3 (27 km south
of Haines Junction).
Kusawa and Aishihik Lakes (Ashèyi)
The quiet grandeur of Kusawa Lake
(raft lake) and Aishihik Lake (head of
lake) beckons for excellent fishing,
camping and off-the-main-road solitude.
The turnoff onto the Kusawa Lake Road
is at Km 1489 on the Alaska Highway #1,
and there are two campgrounds in the
valley. Aishihik Road, located at Km 1549
on the Alaska Highway, offers a recreation
site and campground. Watch for the
resident herd of bison.
Klukshu Village
Klukshu (last place for salmon) is
a seasonal Southern Tutchone fish camp
and village in a picturesque valley
adjacent to Kluane National Park and
Reserve. Visitors can view interpretive
displays, fish traps and a smokehouse.
Km 183 on the Haines Road #3 (63 km
south of Haines Junction).
Pine Lake, Haines Junction
A popular spot for swimming, fishing and
picnicking, the beach and playground at
the Pine Lake Campground make a perfect
family destination. Bring a boat or canoe;
a dock and boat launch provide easy
access to this tranquil lake. On the
Alaska Highway #1 (seven km east of
Haines Junction).
Kluane Walks and Hikes
Roadside trails lead travellers to interesting
features like a rock glacier and a spruce
beetle-infested forest. Backcountry hikers
can tackle multi-day treks on established
trails and routes. Registration is mandatory
for overnight hiking; please check in with
Parks Canada. Summer and winter day
and multi-day hikes can also be arranged
with Yukon tour operators.
