112 Mayor of London Making waste work in London The Mayor’s Draft Business Waste Management Strategy ‘Fabrications’ is an independent gallery, shop and studio dedicated to all aspects of contemporary textiles and design, with a particular interest in recycled materials and sustainable design. Fabrications sells a range of recycled content products including, in response to recent legislation, soft furnishings made from tyres. London alone produces approximately one tonne of redundant fire hose every two months. Environmental supplier Bio-Supplies is currently developing a range of furniture made from redundant fire hose no longer used by the London Fire Brigade. The range includes chairs and furniture frames for beds and sofas. The innovative range of furniture is being targeted at businesses wanting to enhance their environmental credentials and 50 per cent of the profits will be donated to the Fire Brigade and other related charities. Source: London Remade Case study 51 - Recycled content product comes out on top The Hispaniola is a restaurant ship permanently moored at the Embankment in London. After refurbishing the interior and exterior of the ship they wanted to upgrade the existing access walkway with a contemporary design to compliment the high quality of finishes in the restaurant. The selected product needed to be able to cope with changes in level and differential movement between the different substrates and be hard wearing but low in maintenance. Following detailed comparison analysis a recycled glass product was selected. The recycled glass product was fit for purpose but had the advantage of coming in a range of striking colours and the lightweight material also allowed savings to be made in the steel substrate sections. Source: The Waste and Resources Action Programme 5.28 Whilst niche recycled content products are an essential part of London’s sustainable economy, London’s greatest opportunity to influence recycling markets comes from boardroom level decisions to use recycled materials on a mass scale. In such cases, and in order to mainstream them, it may be preferable not to promote their recycled content in order to be accepted by consumers. 5.29 In recent years, work has been undertaken, for example by WRAP and London Remade, to reduce the perception that products containing recycled content are inferior to products made with virgin materials. As a result of improved material collection and sorting processes, a number of fit for purpose, cost competitive recycled content products are now on the market. Making waste work in London The Mayor’s Draft Business Waste Management Strategy Mayor of London 113 can contain a high percentage of recycled materials, notably in paper and construction applications, at no extra cost and of equal quality 248 to virgin materials. 5.30 Extending the Courtauld Commitment to increase the signatories’ use of recycled content materials is an exciting development. The government is also developing a specification for minimum recycled content for glass products 249 , which would increase the use of recycled glass and mainstream its use. Clearly, this could be extended to other material streams. Case study 52 - Retailer pioneers range of recycled content food packaging Work is underway to investigate innovative processes to recycle plastic bottles (PET: used for soft drinks and bottled water etc.), with the aim using the recycled plastic in the production of food-grade PET. The work has been led by Closed Loop London in collaboration with London Remade and plastics experts from UK universities and European reprocessors. Marks & Spencer’s became the first retailer in the UK to trial the use of recycled plastic in food and drink packaging on a large scale and to gauge customer reaction to the concept. Funded by WRAP, the 6-month trial involves around 1,500 tonnes of recycled PET being incorporated into salad bowls, beverage bottles, recipe pots and trays, with the recycled content ranging from 30 per cent to 50 per cent. Marks & Spencer has subsequently won the Tetra Pak Environmental Award and the National Recycling Award for their work with Closed Loop London. Source: Closed Loop London
