Making waste work in London The Mayor’s Draft Business Waste Management Strategy

manage and reprocess London’s most abundant resource.
1.19 Chapter four details the way in which sustainable waste management
and resource use has financial implications for businesses that should
motivate change among the business community. Taking action to prevent
and manage waste in line with the waste hierarchy can save businesses
money, and being better informed can lead to lower compliance costs and
prevent fines for environmental mismanagement.
1.20 Chapter five demonstrates how businesses can take their environmental
performance to the next level. It discusses waste prevention, through product
and packaging design and developing green procurement policies and
procedures. It focuses on managing the environmental impact of a business
through an environmental management system and on cascading that
environmental excellence to other businesses by engaging with suppliers.
Actions such as these can help businesses retain and win new contracts,
access niche markets and act as an incentive for businesses to change.
1.21 Chapter six explains how the Mayor intends to lead by example.
The Mayor and the GLA group’s activities produce business waste
and impact on London’s sustainability. It is crucial that the Mayor’s
operations are exemplary. The Mayor will stimulate the market for
more sustainable goods and services through the GLA group’s
procurement, pioneer sustainable waste management initiatives
and demonstrate the business case for environmental excellence.
1.22 Included in the appendices are contact details, or document links,
to all the organisations and guidance documents mentioned in this
strategy. As such, the strategy can act as a starting point for London’s
businesses to take action to implement the proposals and as a point
of future reference.
1.23 Case studies are peppered throughout the strategy to support assertions
made within the text. An index is included in Appendix 4. Their purpose
is to illustrate ways in which some businesses have already implemented
and profited from sustainable resource management and to demonstrate
the business case for improved environmental performance. The Mayor
wishes to thank the case study organisations for agreeing to have their
work showcased in the strategy; they have inspired its development and it
is hoped they will motivate others to rise to the challenge.
