¾ in the first meeting, the Lions beat the
Steelers 40-7 behind a then-nFL record
426 yards rushing. ernie Caddell scored
three touchdowns in one of the more
memorable games of the Lions’ first
season in detroit.
¾ The Lions won the first four games of
the series and were 12-4-1 through the
first 17 contests.
¾ in 1952, Bob hoernschmeyer ran for
107 yards and the Lions rolled up 321
yards rushing. The detroit defense held
Pittsburgh to minus-3 yards rushing in
a 31-6 win in Pittsburgh.
¾ detroit’s 45-3 win over the Steelers
november 24, 1983 stands as the
Lions’ largest winning margin in the
history of the team’s Thanksgiving day
series (second-largest in team history).
¾ The Lions defeated Pittsburgh 19-16
in the second Thanksgiving day (nov.
26, 1998) matchup between the two
teams. Jason hanson made his fourth
field goal of the game (42-yarder) 2:52
into the extra period. The game marked
the first Thanksgiving oT contest since
1980, and also was highlighted by
a gutsy performance by Pittsburgh
native, Charlie Batch, who completed
16-of-23 passes for 236 yards and a
Td despite leaving the game for a time
with a strained neck. The game will be
remembered by a strange coin toss to
begin the overtime period.
