SUMMARY
With the Lions coming off of their bye at the bottom of the NFC North at 1-3
and the Eagles carrying a six-game win streak in overall series history, there
were plenty that doubted a Lions victory Detroit fired back with a late fourth
quarter rally led by QB Matthew Stafford to overcome a 10-point deficit and
beat the Philadelphia Eagles 26-23 in overtime when K Jason Hanson kicked
a 45-yard field goal on Detroit’s first possession of the extra period Hanson
gave an early first quarter lead after a 48-yard punt return by RB Stefan
Logan to the Eagles 34 The defense held and Hanson kicked a 46-yarder
with 11:08 left after 4 plays, 6 yards, 2 incomplete passes and 0:55 The
Eagles were not able to answer and Hanson padded the lead with another
field goal on the next Lions’ possession after a drive littered with offensive
penalties The second quarter opened up with a Stafford interception by CB
Nndami Asomugha The Eagles were not able to produce as a result of the
takeaway and punted to Detroit The Lions next possession was a threeand-out
with 2 negative yardage plays On the successive Eagles drive, S
Louis Delmas made a grand entrance back to the field and granted the Lions
with their first interception of the season Unfortunately, Detroit was also
not able to capitalize on the turnover The Eagles saw some scoreboard
action for the first time in the half when QB Michael Vick flipped the ball
to RB LeSean McCoy on a screen pass and McCoy fought his way into the
end zone to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead with 1:16 left until halftime The
drive went for 9 plays, 79 yards and 3:28 The third quarter saw the Lions
offense playing sluggish while the Eagles managed to score three field
goals on their three consecutive possessions Their first went for 15 plays
and 72 yards and was kicked by K Alex Henery for 26 yards The next was
a 32 yarder after 10 plays and a 50 yard drive, while the last field goal was
the longest at 49 yards at the very beginning of the fourth quarter After a
would-be Stafford to Johnson touchdown was nullified due to offensive pass
interference on Johnson, another 20 yard reception by Johnson set Stafford
up to scramble into the end zone for a 1 yard touchdown The Eagles took
a 23-13 lead on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Vick to WR Jeremy Maclin
with 5:18 left to play, but the Lions scored on a 17-yard touchdown pass
from Stafford to WR Nate Burleson after a huge improvised 57 yard gain
by TE Tony Scheffler and a 19-yard field goal by Hanson with three seconds
left to play to get the tie and send the game into overtime Back-to-back
sacks of Vick by DE Cliff Avril as well as a DE Kyle Vanden Bosch and DT
Nick Fairley set up the Lions’ winning kick after the Eagles won the coin
flip to start overtime and elected to receive Detroit got the ball back at
midfield and trusted Hanson, like the team has for decades now, to boot in
his fourth, final, and winning field goal of the game
SUMMARY
Last Lions’ Monday Night Football appearance had the Motor City roaring
approval after a fantastic win in front of a rowdy crowd at Ford Field that
sat the team at 5-0 in 2011, but the 2012 big-stage divisional rematch
saw the Bears emerging as victors A lack of third down conversions
and two red zone fumbles had Detroit’s offense scoreless until the end
of the fourth quarter The first drive of the game had the Lions receiving
and going three-and-out after WR Calvin Johnson had two drops and RB
Mikel Leshoure only picked up four yards Chicago scored on their ensuing
possession in less than three minutes when QB Jay Culter shot seven yards
to his favorite recipient WR Brandon Marshall The drive travelled 59 yards
in 6 plays After another three-and-out for the Lions, the Bears were in but
were successfully held after LB Stephen Tulloch had a big tackle on third
down to force a punt Yet again the Lions were not able to gain a first down
which set up the Bears to gain 39 yards: Culter scrambled for 24 plus 15
from an unnecessary roughness penalty Lions forced a 39 yard field goal
from K Robbie Gould after a tackle for a loss of three on the third down by
LB DeAndre Levy P Nick Harris booted it 58 yards after the next Detroit
possession was unproductive The second quarter opened up with Chicago
and then Detroit following, each with in-and-out drives Detroit’s defense
showed up in a significant fashion the next time the Bears had their hands
on the ball when Cutler was sacked on third down for a loss of 9 yards by
LBs Stephen Tulloch and Justin Durant compelling a field goal situation
Gould attempted a 47 yarder but was thwarted by DE Lawrence Jackson
on the block DT Ndamukong Suh delivered a rib-bruising sack to Culter on
the subsequent Bears’ control and allowed for another three-and-out Just
after the two minute warning of the half, Leshoure fumbled at Chicago’s 18
yard line and it was recovered by LB Julius Peppers The half opened with
the Lions’ defense managing get the Bears off the field in three downs, but
Adam Podlesh’s punt was muffed by RB Stefan Logan and recovered by
CB Zack Bowman at the Detroit 27 The turnover was converted to three
final points when Gould booted a 21-yard field goal to make the score
13-0 QB Matthew Stafford drove the Lions all the way down the field
to the Chicago 1 when RB Joique Bell tried to leap over the dog pile for
the touchdown, fumbled, and LB Brian Urlacher returned it 4 yards to the
Chicago 5 Detroit got on the board with 30 seconds left to go in the game
regardless of Stafford being sacked early in the drive for a loss of 15 yards
Stafford connected with rookie WR Ryan Broyles to get him his first NFL
touchdown that was topped off with a successful PAT from K Jason Hanson
in an 8 play, 53 yard, 1:43 drive
