SUMMARY
The 73rd Annual Detroit Lions’ Thanksgiving Classic saw the Houston Texans
heading north for only the third match-up between the two teams in series history
The Lions elected to receive first and were eager to get started early Their goal was
almost thwarted when DE JJ Watt sacked QB Matthew Stafford on the first play of
the game for a loss of 7 yards Undeterred, Stafford picked up a first when he shot
a 25 yarder to WR Ryan Broyles a play later Another deep ball, this one for 20, to
WR Calvin Johnson got Detroit to the 44 A 12 yard run by RB Mikel Leshoure and
a 12 yard pass to WR Mike Thomas had two more first downs TE Tony Scheffler’s
10 yard reception at the 12 converted a third down and set up Leshoure to push
his way 2 yards for a touchdown The 12 play, 80 yard, 5:02 drive marked the first
time Detroit scored on their first possession and the first rush touchdown Houston
gave up all season The remainder of the first quarter was a fight of the defenses
with three Texans three-and-outs and two Lions three-and-outs The last drive
of the quarter saw fresh first downs for the home team but had no fresh points at
its conclusion at the start of the second Houston scored on the successive push
down the field when RB Arian Foster raced 6 yards into the end zone after 7 plays
travelling 74 yards in 3:42 A short run by Leshoure on the Lions control of the
ball after the PAT, a 14 yard catch by Johnson and another diving 35 yard snag
by Johnson had the Lions sitting pretty at Houston’s 31 Two 12 yard passes to
Johnson and TE Brandon Pettigrew drove the ball down the field to the 5 yard
line A 5 yard pass down the middle sailed into Thomas’ waiting hands for six more
points in Detroit’s favor QB Matt Schaub flew a pass deep to WR Andre Johnson
for 43 yards to convert a third down on the following drive Two plays later, despite
a tackle for loss on the ball carrier delivered by LB Stephen Tulloch, TE Owen
Daniels caught a 9 yard pass to bring the score to 14-14 Lions’ RB Stefan Logan
provided a solid 38 yard kick return to put Detroit at the 41 Stafford shot the ball
to Broyles 37 yards and then 22 yards to Johnson for a touchdown in 2 plays, 59
yards and 0:22 The first half ended with a Schaub sack for -9 yards by DE Cliff
Avril and the Lions leading by seven K Jason Hanson sunk a 46 yard field goal in
the first Lions ball tenure of the third quarter On the next drive, RB Justin Forsett
was down on the ground but the whistle wasn’t called and the play continued
allowing him to run in an 81 yard touchdown The scoring play was nullified for
review after a penalty on head coach Jim Schwartz due to throwing a challenge
flag With the momentum shifting in Houston’s favor, Detroit punted to ball back
and K Shayne Graham booted in a 45 yard field goal to tie the game again Opening
play of the fourth had RB Joique Bell darting 23 yards for the go-ahead Detroit
defense held Houston scoreless until the two minute warning when Foster had a
1 yard rush to once more tie the game at 31-31 The Lions were unable to score
with the time remaining forcing overtime A 40 yard catch by Broyles got Detroit
to the 40 when Pettigrew fumbled to be recovered by LB Darryl Sharpton Graham
missed a 51 yard field goal and gave Detroit another shot P Nick Harris was in
after the Lions were unable to score CB Chris Houston’s interception got the ball
in Detroit’s hands Hanson’s 47 yard attempt hit the upright and Graham managed
a 32 yarder directly after for the win in overtime
SUMMARY
In the last of a three game stretch at home the Detroit Lions ultimately fell to the
Indianapolis Colts despite maintaining a lead for 59 minutes Detroit picked up a
first down on the opening play when QB Matthew Stafford shot it 11 yards to WR
Calvin Johnson RB Mikel Leshoure picked up three and two incomplete passes
had the Colts on the field DT Ndamukong Suh welcomed Luck to Ford Field with a
sack on the first snap for a loss of seven yards and set up a three-and-out for the
Colts The initial score of the game came on the next drive when a third-and-seven
became a third-and-two after a penalty on LB Robert Mathis, then Stafford nailed a
14 yard pass to Johnson for a first WR Ryan Broyles picked up three and Leshoure
picked up 4 but the offense settled for a 48 yard field goal from K Jason Hanson
Luck was at the helm with an answering drive when he converted a third down
on a 60 yard pass to WR TY Hilton Facing another third down, WR Donnie Avery
snagged a 17 yard pass from Luck for his first score RB Stefan Logan returned a
73 yard kick from P Pat McAfee 21 yards to Detroit’s 13 Stafford relied on his arm
to move the chains with a 15 yard reception from RB Joique Bell, a 39 yard grab
from TE Tony Scheffler and a few short passes to get the first Stafford passed
deep right to TE Brandon Pettigrew in the end zone on the second-and-seven to
take the lead The Colts went three-and-out and the Lions avoided their own punt
when Pettigrew caught Stafford’s 17 yard pass and Johnson had a one-armed 32
yard catch to set up Leshoure’s rush up the middle for a 6 yard touchdown In three
plays and two defensive penalties TE Coby Fleener received a 26 yard pass from
Luck in the end zone for six in response Two drives later CB Drayton Florence’s
pick resulted in a chip shot field goal Hanson struck again when he booted a 52
yard field goal Luck was steering the Colts down with three firsts when S Don
Carey snagged an interception Stafford gave the ball right back when Mathis
picked off a pass intended for Pettigrew Detroit held to a three-and-out to end
the half RB Vick Ballard marched right down the field to start the third quarter
and capped it off with an 11 yard touchdown run The ensuing four drives all ended
with punts The fifth drive Johnson picked up 11 yards and a first down After a
short gain by TE Will Heller, Stafford looked to his go-to Johnson for the 46 yard
sliding touchdown Johnson made it the fifth straight game with over 125 receiving
yards on that 12th catch Johnson’s 8 yard reception on the first Lions’ possession
of the fourth marked his single-game career high reception total The Colts came
out scoreless on their first two drives, the second in large part to a strip-sack
from DE Cliff Avril On the subsequent Detroit possession, Bell tore up a 67-yard
run and Hanson kicked his fourth field goal to give the Lions a 33-21 lead Carey
nabbed his second interception of Luck, thwarting the Colts’ follow-up However,
Luck came right back with a 42-yard pitch for six to WR LaVon Brazill The score
sat at 28-33 with 2:39 left in the game with the ball back in Stafford’s hands Bell
went three, then -2 yards On the third-and-five Leshoure ran for one and P Nick
Harris punted 25 yards to the Colts’ 25 Rookie Luck scrambled for nine, spiked
the ball, threw to WR Reggie Wayne for 26, spiked again, ran for 16, got 10 more
from TE Dwayne Allen, had three incomplete passes and with three seconds to
go in the game, made it 14 yards to Avery for the win
