SUMMARY
Ready to play host to a stout Seattle Seahawks defense after a month on the road,
the Detroit Lions were revved up for victory In true QB Matthew Stafford fashion,
he led yet another late fourth quarter comeback win 24-28 The first drive of the
game kept the Lions off the board and the Seahawks were almost met with the
same fate when an illegal punt formation penalty called on the Lions gave the ball
back to the Seahawks QB Russell Wilson used the opportunity to drive Seattle
down the field but the defense was able to hold them to a short 23 yard field goal
delivered by K Steven Hauschka in 13 plays, 72 yards, 6:58 and three penalties
On the ensuing drive Stafford threw two long passes: 19 to WR Ryan Broyles and
20 to TE Tony Scheffler to move the chains The 82 yard drive was capped off with
the Lions’ first touchdown of the season in the first quarter with a 6 yard pass to
Broyles in 9 plays and 5:30 with no time left in the quarter On the initial play of
the second quarter RB Marshawn Lynch broke free for a 77 yard touchdown dash
that lasted 17 seconds Detroit went three-and-out as an answer and Seattle’s
offense continued their momentum with a 9 yard touchdown pass from Wilson to
WR Sidney Rice in 6 plays, 80 yards and 2:50 On the Lions next chance with the
ball however, Scheffler had a 14 yard reception for a first, TE Brandon Pettigrew
had another with an 18 yard reception and the drive was completed when Stafford
connected a deep 46 yard pass to WR Titus Young in the end zone Stafford went
80 yards in 6 plays and just under three minutes to put the score at 17-14 in the
Seahawks’ favor going into the half Midway through the third quarter Stafford was
picked off with a pass intended for Scheffler in the end zone by FS Earl Thomas
Not looking to be shown up, S Ricardo Silva countered with his own interception
that he returned 26 yards to the Detroit 44 WR Calvin Johnson opened up the
drive with a 25 yard reception, Pettigrew as able to convert a third down with
a 9 yard catch and Stafford scrambled it in for a 1 yard touchdown to put the
Lions up three at the beginning of the fourth quarter Right away WR Zach Miller
made a 16 yard catch on a toss from Wilson with 5:27 left to put the Seahawks
ahead But Seattle couldn’t stop the Lions on their last possession Johnson
opened it up with a 15 yard reception, with Pettigrew and RB Joique Bell eating
up receptions to keep the drive alive, including Bell’s 11 yard snag that was just
short of a touchdown and got Detroit to the 1 yard line for a third-and-goal The
Lions needed to either punch it in the end zone or kick a field goal and send it
to overtime, but Stafford went for the pass-play With Johnson getting healthy
coverage Young was wide open for a low 1 yard pass for the win with 20 seconds
left The 16-play drive started at Detroit’s 20 and travelled 80 yards in 5:07 To
seal the victory, Silva recovered a Seattle fumble with eight seconds left to go in
the game Detroit became one step closer to500 after the win with a 3-4 record
SUMMARY
RB Mikel Leshoure led the Lions to a 31-14 road victory down in balmy Jacksonville
with his three rush touchdowns, all of which came in the first half of the game
Both teams were forced to punt on their first possessions The Lions their second
drive at its own 8-yard line after a 73-yard monster punt from P Bryan Anger A
Jacksonville penalty and a 28-yard catch by TE Tony Scheffler drove the ball down
the field to set up a 47-yard field goal attempt by K Jason Hanson However, the
steadfast kicker booted it off the right upright and the Lions continued to put up
new points on the board The Jags then went for three-and-out Anger had Detroit
pinned deep in the backfield yet again, this time at the 9 yard line QB Matthew
Stafford was in to orchestrate a drive spilling into the second quarter for 13 plays,
91 yards and 5:50 that culminated in Leshoure’s first touchdown of the day The
scoring drive was set up by two big catches from WR Calvin Johnson: a 26 yarder
and an 18 yarder Jacksonville had no fresh first downs and gave the ball back to
Detroit to the 47 Working with their best field position thus far in the game thanks
to Anger, a 38-yard deep reception by Johnson took the ball to the 1-yard line and
Leshoure dashed in on the next play for a 14-0 lead with 7:58 to play in the first
half Though the Jags were able to obtain their sole first down of the half on their
next possession they ultimately had to punt With the ball back in Lions’ hands and
staring a third down situation in the face, a pass interference call on the Jaguars
provided 20 free yards and an obvious first down A 12 yard catch by Johnson and
a 17 yard catch by WR Titus Young landed Leshoure at the 8 yard line on 2nd and
7 T Riley Reiff gave him a clear shot to book it 8 yards into the end zone and give
Detroit a cushy 21 point lead just before halftime in 10 plays, 81 yards and 4:11
QB Blaine Gabbert was picked off by S Erik Coleman on Jacksonville’s ensuing
control of the ball, but Detroit was unable to produce a score and punted Near the
end of the third quarter after scoreless drives from each team, Jacksonville rushed
and passed to get into scoring position at Detroit’s 26 Gabbert then had a pass
tipped and rookie CB Jonte Green came up with it for his first career interception
Stafford moved the chains to get K Jason Hanson in position to sink a 42-yard
field goal from Hanson to give the Lions a 24-0 lead with 13:56 left in the game
Jacksonville responded with its longest and first scoring drive Gabbert found WR
Michael Spurlock in the end zone from five yards out and RB Rashad Jennings then
caught a pass on the two-point conversion to make it a 24-8 game after 9 plays,
80 yards and 5:54 Detroit’s answer was swift with a nine-play drive that covered
80 yards when RB Joique Bell ran up the middle 10 yards for another six to give
a 31-8 lead A 6-yard touchdown catch by WR Justin Blackmon with 50 seconds
to play coupled with a failed 2-point sealed the Jaguars fate
