Election of <strong>Conference</strong> Secretary and <strong>Conference</strong> Statistician<br />

Bishop Gwinn called on Jane Johnson, Lay member (BU - Mebane). Ms. Johnson placed in<br />

nomination Jerry Bryan for the office of <strong>Conference</strong> Secretary for the next Quadrennium.<br />

The motion was seconded. The bishop asked for additional nominations and hearing none, he<br />

called for the vote and Rev. Dr. James L. Bryan was elected as <strong>Conference</strong> Secretary for the<br />

next Quadrennium. Bishop Gwinn called on Christine Dodson, <strong>Conference</strong> Treasurer, who<br />

nominated Rev. George Speake as the <strong>Conference</strong> Statistician. The motion was seconded and<br />

he was elected to the office of <strong>Conference</strong> Statistician.<br />

Report of the Committee on <strong>Conference</strong> Rules:<br />

Bishop Gwinn recognized Bob Guthrie who presented the report of the Committee on<br />

<strong>Conference</strong> Rules. Mr. Guthrie made a reference to the changes to the <strong>Conference</strong> Rules<br />

(available online). Mr. Guthrie moved the adoption of those changes and they were adopted.<br />

The lay/clergy equalization plan under section 3A was presented and approved.<br />

Mr. Guthrie stated that he will be available after this session to listen to suggestions from<br />

the Annual <strong>Conference</strong> with regard to rule changes. Mr. Guthrie thanked Bishop Gwinn<br />

for the opportunity to serve in the conference leadership and thanked him for his service.<br />

Bishop Gwinn thanked Mr. Guthrie for his words and then recognized Ken Ripley (RM -<br />

Spring Hope) who moved that in Section C2, “individuals or agencies sponsoring resolutions<br />

should be allowed to speak to their resolutions at least once before any vote is taken.” The<br />

amendment was seconded. Bishop Gwinn asked for speeches for and against. Bishop Gwinn<br />

recognized Bob Guthrie, Chair of the Rules Committee, who rose to a point of information<br />

letting the conference know that this is already covered in the rules. Bishop Gwinn stated<br />

this was a speech against the amendment. Ripley spoke in favor of his amendment. The vote<br />

was called for and the amendment failed. The amended <strong>Conference</strong> Rules, were then placed<br />

before the Annual <strong>Conference</strong> for approval and they were approved.<br />

Welcome:<br />

Bishop Gwinn called upon the Reverend Richard Stone, Elizabeth City District, as the host<br />

district superintendent for the <strong>2012</strong> annual conference. Rev. Stone brought greetings from the<br />

Elizabeth City District. Bishop Gwinn asked the members of the Elizabeth City District to<br />

stand and they were recognized with a round of applause. Bishop Gwinn recognized Michael<br />

Rice from All God’s Children in the EC district, who spoke about a new sewing ministry at<br />

All God’s Children. He presented Bishop Gwinn with a hand-crafted stole and bag created<br />

by the “E-zone” ministry which provides jobs in the Aulander area.<br />

Structure Review Committee<br />

Bishop Gwinn invited Emily Innes, <strong>Conference</strong> Lay Leader, to bring a report for the<br />

Structure Review Committee. The changes made by the Structure Review Committee can<br />

be found on page 7 & 10 of the North Carolina Christian Advocate, June <strong>2012</strong>. Ms. Innes<br />

moved for the approval of the structural changes and they were approved by the Annual<br />

<strong>Conference</strong>.
