Section 6. The vote was taken and Section 6 was approved. Rev. Allen moved the adoption<br />

of Sections 8 & 9 of the report of the CF&A. The vote was taken and Sections 8 & 9 were<br />

approved. Rev. Allen then moved the adoption of Section 7, District Superintendents salary.<br />

Bishop Gwinn recognized Milford Oxendine (WI - Chadburn-Evergreen) who rose to<br />

a point of inquiry. Bishop Gwinn asked Rev. Allen to respond. Bishop Gwinn recognized<br />

Jeanne Neal (BU - Haw River) who rose to a point of inquiry. Christine Dodson, <strong>Conference</strong><br />

Treasurer, responded to the inquiry. The vote was taken and Section 7 was approved. Rev.<br />

Allen then moved the adoption of the CF&A report as a whole. The vote was taken and the<br />

report as a whole was approved. Bishop Gwinn recognized Chris Humphreys (SA - Center)<br />

who rose to a point of inquiry asking for a ruling from the Bishop: “What does ‘promote<br />

acceptance of homosexuality’ mean?” The Bishop took the inquiry under advisement and<br />

reported that he would rule later. Bishop Gwinn then recognized Rev. Allen who placed in<br />

nomination Christine Dodson as <strong>Conference</strong> Treasurer for the next Quadrennium. Bishop<br />

Gwinn called for the vote and the motion was approved and she received a round of applause.<br />

The conference secretary made announcements and Bishop Gwinn announced a brief break<br />

to prepare for the order of the day.<br />

Order of the Day - The Memorial Service and All Saints<br />

Celebration:<br />

Bishop Alfred W. Gwinn, Jr. presided, Bishop Paul L. Leeland preached, The Reverend Albert<br />

Shuler and The Reverend Sylvia Collins-Ball served as liturgists. Special music was provided<br />

by Bradley Naylor, Laura Mitchell, and Kathie Wilkinson. Fred Mason, Jr. served as organist.<br />

Bishop Leeland preached a sermon entitled We Rejoice in our Sufferings. As the name of<br />

each one who had died was read, a bell tolled, and a candle was lit for each person named.<br />

Afternoon Session, Thursday, June 14, <strong>2012</strong><br />

Prior to the beginning of the Session, <strong>Conference</strong> Secretary, Jerry Bryan called the<br />

<strong>Conference</strong>s’ attention to an accessibility survey for the churches and encouraged the<br />

members of the Annual <strong>Conference</strong> to complete it.<br />

The afternoon session was opened at 2:05 p.m. with singing of the hymn The Summons.<br />

Bishop Gwinn began the afternoon session with prayer.<br />

Recognition of Retirees:<br />

Bishop Gwinn recognized Cashar Evans (EC - Kitty Hawk) to make the report on behalf of<br />

the Board of Pensions. Mr. Evans introduced the retirees for <strong>2012</strong> to the Annual <strong>Conference</strong>.<br />

A list of retirees is located in the <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> Workbook, p 46-47. The Retirees were<br />

greeted with a standing ovation. Bishop Gwinn took the opportunity to extend a special<br />

word of thanks to the spouses of the retirees. The spouses stood and also received a standing<br />

ovation. Bishop Gwinn then invited Bill Gattis, representing the retirees to come forward<br />

for a ceremony of the “Passing of the Mantle” to Ismael Ruiz-Millan, a member of the newly<br />

ordained class.
