Rev. Swartz presented Resolution #2: Domestic Violence Awareness which came from<br />

the <strong>Conference</strong> Board of Church and Society and was placed before the body with no<br />

recommendation. There was no discussion. The vote was taken and the Resolution #2 was<br />

adopted.<br />

Rev. Swartz called the attention of the conference to Resolution #3: Concerning Legislative<br />

Unfairness/Fairness at General <strong>Conference</strong> submitted by the Rev. Paul Stallsworth, (NB - St.<br />

Peters). The Resolutions Committee recommended that the resolution be defeated. Bishop<br />

Gwinn recognized Rev. Stallsworth, author of the resolution to speak and he spoke in favor<br />

of the resolution. Bishop Gwinn recognized Beth Hood, Greenville District Superintendent,<br />

who spoke against the resolution. Bishop Gwinn recognized Gail Ward (GO - Falling Creek)<br />

who spoke in favor of the resolution. Bishop Gwinn recognized Rev. Jim Herring (GO - St.<br />

Pauls) who spoke in favor of the resolution. Bishop Gwinn recognized Ken Ripley (RM -<br />

Spring Hope) who spoke against the resolution. Bishop Gwinn tested the body to determine<br />

if they were ready to vote. The vote was taken and the resolution was defeated. Dr. Swartz<br />

concluded the report of the Committee on Resolutions. Bishop Gwinn expressed a word of<br />

appreciation for his leadership.<br />

At 9:25 a.m. the bishop called for a 5 minute recess. He reconvened Annual <strong>Conference</strong> at<br />

9:30 a.m.<br />

Disaster Recovery:<br />

Bishop Gwinn recognized Cliff Harvell (Disaster Response Superintendent) to bring the<br />

report on Disaster Recovery Ministry accompanied by a slide show. The report described the<br />

work of the Disaster Recovery Ministry in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene which made<br />

landfall August 27, 2011 in <strong>NC</strong>. Bishop Gwinn recognized Rev. Carol Goehring, Director<br />

of Connectional Ministries, who announced that Harvell will continue as Disaster Recovery<br />

Superintendent. Rev. Goehring spoke about the 3MC ministry and how they will be involved<br />

in disaster response ministry as well. She introduced Sam Honeycutt from 3MC ministry<br />

which will be assisting also with Disaster Recovery Ministry. Mr. Honeycutt addressed the<br />

Annual <strong>Conference</strong>. Mr. Honeycutt introduced Pam Atkins to the Annual <strong>Conference</strong> and<br />

she spoke briefly. She is the only paid employee of 3MC, otherwise it is an all-volunteer<br />

organization. Ms. Atkins invited the Annual <strong>Conference</strong> to an upcoming concert/fundraiser.<br />

Bishop Gwinn thanked Ms. Atkins for her words and welcomed her to the Annual<br />

<strong>Conference</strong>.<br />

New Faith Communities:<br />

Bishop Gwinn recognized the Rev. Jeff Severt to bring the report on the New Faith<br />

Communities for the Annual <strong>Conference</strong>. Rev. Severt stated that Jesus never said to start<br />

churches, but to go make disciples. Those disciples will start churches. Disciples come first.<br />

They are chosen, invited, loved, and sent out. “The church is not our parish, the world is.” Rev.<br />

Severt introduced the the six leaders of New Faith Communities in the Annual <strong>Conference</strong><br />

beginning this conference year, <strong>2012</strong>-2013. They are: Kimberly Morningham - starting a new<br />

church in Cary; Brian Wellborn - Hollands in the Garner area will start Westlake Campus;<br />

Chris Williams going to the Wake Crossroads/Rolesville area. Jim Pegan is starting New<br />

Christ Community Church in Clayton; Sean Mitchell starting a new mission community in<br />

the Enfield community; and Brooks Gale starting a mission community in the Rockingham<br />

area. These pastors stood before the Annual <strong>Conference</strong> and were greeted with a standing<br />

ovation. Rev. Severt invited all the current and previous church planters to come lay hands on
