Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) began his career
as a sculptor, but decided to become a bronze-caster
like his father, and became one of the most famous
of his generation. He worked for Pierre Gouthière and
benefited greatly from that artist's instruction, and
when he considered he had sufficient experience, he
opened his own workshop. However, his major breakthrough
came when he started collaborating with
Jean-Claude-Thomas Duplessis, artistic director of the
Sèvres porcelain factory. When Duplessis died in 1783,
Thomire assumed his role and was responsible for all

gilded bronze ornaments used in the factory's production.
Thus he was fully occupied with these tasks during
the French Revolution, when many others had the
misfortune to go bankrupt. In 1809, Thomire was commissioned
to supply exquisite bronzes to Napoleon's
palaces, and was subsequently appointed "Ciseleur de
l'empereur" ("Engraver to the Emperor"). A few years
later, his workshop was described as Fournisseur de
leurs majestés ("Purveyors to Their Majesties"). Thomire's
workshop survived the fall of Napoleon, and he
continued to accumulate medals and accolades at the
renowned Paris Exhibitions. He did not retire until the
age of 72, but continued as a sculptor and exhibited at
The Salon until he was over 80.
