Natural pink diamonds are extremely rare, making them some of the most exclusive diamonds you can get and by far
the majority of them come from the Argyle mine in Australia, one of the world’s largest diamond mines.
The first Argyle diamond was discovered in 1979, when a geologist came across a diamond crystal buried in an anthill.
The actual Argyle diamond mine was constructed on the site in 1985.
The pink diamonds from the Argyle mine are, because of their great beauty and rarity, highly sought after on the international
diamond market. A mere 0.01% of the world’s diamonds are pink. This has caused prices to rise to astronomical
hights over the past ten years, which is why pink diamonds cost around twenty times the price of white diamonds.
In a year, the Argyle mine extracts no more than around 50 pink diamonds weighing over .50 ct. Furthermore the
mine is only expected to be able to continue extracting diamonds for ten more years, after which its supplies will be
exhausted.
