2-2 Japanese distribution of UK films In the charts in this section, the dates used for analysis are as follows: Time range of titles - Theatrical results in Japan: titles released in UK from 1970s’ to Nov.2006 - DVD results in Japan: titles released in UK from 1970s’ to May. 2007 The time of release is based on the UK opening date, not the Japanese one. Definition of nationality - British and British co-production titles are as reported by Japanese distributors because Japan has no definition of nationality of film. See 2-3 (1) (1) Theatrical distribution There are two major groups of distributors for British films in Japan, Hollywood subsidiaries and Japanese distributors. There are five Hollywood subsidiaries: • Warner Brothers Japan • U.I.P • Buena Vista international (Japan) • Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan • 20th century Fox Movies The key Japanese distributors are: • Gaga • Kadokawa (formerly Herald) • Asmik Ace • Cine Quanon • Show Gate • Shochiku • Toho Towa (subsidiary of Toho) • Amuse Pictures According to the number of films distributed, Gaga is the top distributor followed by UIP, Kadokawa (Herald), WB and Asmik Ace. 92
