New York, emigrated to this state (Illinois) about the year<br />

1822. July 20. 1824, he married Miss Permelia Anderson,<br />

daughter of Capt. John Anderson; who was at that time a<br />

leading citizen of the county. The doctor continued in the<br />

practice of medicine and surgery until 1878; when from impaired<br />

vision and the effects of age he was compelled to de-<br />

sist; having been actively engaged in his profession for fiftysix<br />

years. Permelia < Anderson) <strong>Rathbone</strong> was the daughter<br />

of Capt. John Anderson and Mourning (<br />

Maulding) Ander-<br />

son; she was born at Henderson, Kentucky. September 2S,<br />

1807. came with her father and mother to this state (Illinois)<br />

when about ten years of age; she was married to Dr. Lorenzo<br />

<strong>Rathbone</strong> at her father's house in McLeansboro, July 20,<br />

[824. Dr. Lorenzo <strong>Rathbone</strong> and his wife were both members<br />

of the Presbyterian church. "Many daughters have<br />

done virtuously: But thou excellest them all."<br />

Dr. Valentine S. Benson of McLeansboro, Ills., was born<br />

in Gallatin County. May 22, 1834; the son of Charles R. and<br />

Mary (Riggiu) Benson, natives respectively of Virginia and<br />

Tennessee. Grandparents. Babel Benson and Nellie (Sow-<br />

'ird) Benson, resided in Greenbrier County, Virginia. The
