SOLOMON RATHBUN,<br />

Born May 21, 1778. at Richmond, Berkshire Co.. Mass.,<br />

moved to' Milton, Saratoga Co., N. Y., in 1804, entered the<br />

law office of Judge James Thompson, 1805: was admitted<br />

to the Saratoga Co. bar, 1806. Married to Lucy Ann Beebe,<br />

Dec. 6, 1S06; located at Martinsburg, Lewis Co.. X. 1.,<br />

spring of 1807: moved to Galway. Saratoga Co.. N. \ .. 1811.<br />

being appointed postmaster, returned to Milton, ("Rock<br />

City"), 1813. In 1815, he with several of his brothers<br />

changed the spelling of the name Rathbun to <strong>Rathbone</strong> to<br />

correspond with the correct old England way of spelling the<br />

terminal syllable.<br />

In 1817. he started for the ''great west". Vincennes. Inc.,<br />

being his objective place. The trip down the Ohio was a<br />

very unpleasant and troublesome one. He changed plans,<br />

settling April. 1818. at Fort Masser. Ills., forty miles above<br />

the mouth of the Ohio river, founding the town of Belgrade,<br />

securing the establishment of a post office and his appointment<br />

as postmaster. He moved, 182 1 to Golconda, 1822.. to<br />

the "Salines" near the present town of Equality, and in 1823<br />

started for Vincennes, the place where he had originally intended<br />

to settle. During these six years he had suffered<br />

great affliction in his family from sickness and death of children,<br />

enduring many hardships and nearly exhausting his<br />

moderate means.<br />

In 1848. he went to Evansville. Indiana, to live with his<br />

son. George W. who was a leading banker of that place.<br />

His residence in Vincennes and in Evansville was in the<br />

midst of congenial associations, being with the best class<br />

of people of the community.<br />

His death on the 15th of February, i860, was followed<br />

four days later by that of his wife, who had so faithfully<br />

shared with him the joys and sorrows of over 50 years.
