SOLOMON RATHBUN,
Born May 21, 1778. at Richmond, Berkshire Co.. Mass.,
moved to' Milton, Saratoga Co., N. Y., in 1804, entered the
law office of Judge James Thompson, 1805: was admitted
to the Saratoga Co. bar, 1806. Married to Lucy Ann Beebe,
Dec. 6, 1S06; located at Martinsburg, Lewis Co.. X. 1.,
spring of 1807: moved to Galway. Saratoga Co.. N. \ .. 1811.
being appointed postmaster, returned to Milton, ("Rock
City"), 1813. In 1815, he with several of his brothers
changed the spelling of the name Rathbun to Rathbone to
correspond with the correct old England way of spelling the
terminal syllable.
In 1817. he started for the ''great west". Vincennes. Inc.,
being his objective place. The trip down the Ohio was a
very unpleasant and troublesome one. He changed plans,
settling April. 1818. at Fort Masser. Ills., forty miles above
the mouth of the Ohio river, founding the town of Belgrade,
securing the establishment of a post office and his appointment
as postmaster. He moved, 182 1 to Golconda, 1822.. to
the "Salines" near the present town of Equality, and in 1823
started for Vincennes, the place where he had originally intended
to settle. During these six years he had suffered
great affliction in his family from sickness and death of children,
enduring many hardships and nearly exhausting his
moderate means.
In 1848. he went to Evansville. Indiana, to live with his
son. George W. who was a leading banker of that place.
His residence in Vincennes and in Evansville was in the
midst of congenial associations, being with the best class
of people of the community.
His death on the 15th of February, i860, was followed
four days later by that of his wife, who had so faithfully
shared with him the joys and sorrows of over 50 years.
