), born on Block Island, R. I., June 16, 1734;<br />

married Hannah Rose, March 4, 1756; she was born .May<br />

18, 1728, and died March 10, 1807. He died Jan. — . 18 18.<br />

He was known as "Walter, the scribe." He was town clerk<br />

of Xew Shoreham (Block Island), sixty years. In 1757, he,<br />

together with Oliver King Rose and William Willis were adfreemen,<br />

and in 1774 he was a representative in the<br />

General Assembly and in the same year was appointed by<br />

the Islanders at town meeting a committee to give the closest<br />

attention to everything which concerned the liberties of<br />

America. They were to resist earnestly the duty on tea enforced<br />

by England. As town clerk he signs an admirable<br />

paper setting forth the grievances of the colony on account<br />

of sheep and lambs taken from Block Island by the colony.<br />

He furnished twenty sheep and w r as allowed £5, ios., 6d.<br />

Sept. 2. 1775. These sheep were purchased by colony,<br />

partly for use of the army and partly to save them from the<br />

threatened raids of British cruisers. The prices paid for them<br />

were fixed by appraisers, appointed by cononial authorities<br />
