Throckmorton Coggeshall, Nov. 3, 1692: she was born at<br />

Newport, R. I.. Aug. 13. 1669 and died Aug. 3, 1747. He<br />

died Jan. 24. 1757. on Block Island. R. I.; she was the daughter<br />

of Major John and Patience (Throckmorton) Coggeshall.<br />

The Major was 1684 appointed major of militia. The inscription<br />

on his tombstone is as follows: "Here lies the body<br />

of John Coggeshall 'Major', he died Oct. 1. 1768." Samuel<br />

was admitted freeman, Jan. 2, 1693. ^ n I/08. constable;<br />

Oct. 8, 1695. ensign and third townsman, April 12 171 5. He<br />

held lands in Common Neck in 1705 (fourteen acres). In<br />

May, 1730. he was admitted freeman of Xorth Kingston, R.<br />

I.: some of his descendants still live on and own a portion of<br />

the estate purchased by his father. John <strong>Rathbone</strong>, in 1660<br />

on Block Island, R. I.; of the following eight children Samuel<br />

only remained on the Island. He inherited the homestead.<br />

He was town treasurer in 1743. His tax £5.3.10. John<br />

Coggeshall. Sr.. was born in Essex Co., England in 1 5 9 1<br />

married Mary : he died Xov. 27, 1647: she died Nov.<br />

8, 1684. He was a silk merchant at Newport. R. I., June 22,<br />

1632. He with thirty-two others signed the oath of allegiance<br />

and departed for New England in a day of two. taking<br />

his wife Mary and children, John, Joshua and Annie. He<br />
