Rt. Rev. Henry Yates Satterlee. Bishop of Washington,
D. C.
It is not anv great task, to trace the genealogy of the
American Satterlee family. The family, originally, came
from the village of Satterlee, Suffolk. England, and it has
been in America, since 1685. It is descended from Benedict
Satterlee. the son of the Rev. William Satterlee, vicar
of Saint Ida's Clinch, Ide. Devonshire. The latter was a
Royalist and was sequestered from his parish during Cromwell's
time and imprisoned in a stable for a long time. During
the days of the Colonial wars, a younger Benedict Sat-
terlee, was Lieutenant of a Connecticut Company, and afterwards
he was killed during the Revolutionary war. in the
massacre of Wyoming. He was Bishop Satterlee's great,
great grandfather.
