which ply Lake Ontario, the Bay of Ouinte, St. Lawrence<br />

river and Rideau canal. Mr. Rathbun also takes a deep interest<br />

in agricultural affairs and is identified with the cheese<br />

and butter industries of the district for which he has done<br />

much to estahliss and advance on the latest scientific<br />

principles. That he is able to undertake such vast responsi-<br />

bilities and closely supervise so many diverse industries i><br />

due to his methodical arrangement 'of time, his choice of<br />

agents, his temperate habits and the geniality and magnetism<br />

of his disposition.<br />

While attending to his great business undertakings he<br />

"also takes a proper interest in public affairs. He was recently<br />

selected by the Ontario government as chairman of an<br />

important commission appointed to consider and report<br />

upon better methods of conserving the forest wealth of the<br />

province. L'pon the incorporation of Deseronto as a town.<br />

in 1889. he was unanimously elected as its first mayor and<br />

has since held that office without interruption.<br />

He is an elder in the Presbyterian church and Superintendent<br />

of the Sunday school and ever ready to aid and forward<br />

any undertaking calculated to benefit or stimulate the<br />

intellectual or moral improvement of the community.<br />

Mr. Rathbun was married Nov. 18. 1863. to Miss Eliza<br />

beth Burt, of Auburn. X. Y.; she was born March 12. 1840.<br />

died Aug. 19. 1871: married, second. Miss Bunella McMurrich.<br />

daughter of the late Hon. John McMurrich. Toronto.<br />

June 11. 1873: she was born June II, 1853. His family consists<br />

of seven children:<br />
