which ply Lake Ontario, the Bay of Ouinte, St. Lawrence
river and Rideau canal. Mr. Rathbun also takes a deep interest
in agricultural affairs and is identified with the cheese
and butter industries of the district for which he has done
much to estahliss and advance on the latest scientific
principles. That he is able to undertake such vast responsi-
bilities and closely supervise so many diverse industries i>
due to his methodical arrangement 'of time, his choice of
agents, his temperate habits and the geniality and magnetism
of his disposition.
While attending to his great business undertakings he
"also takes a proper interest in public affairs. He was recently
selected by the Ontario government as chairman of an
important commission appointed to consider and report
upon better methods of conserving the forest wealth of the
province. L'pon the incorporation of Deseronto as a town.
in 1889. he was unanimously elected as its first mayor and
has since held that office without interruption.
He is an elder in the Presbyterian church and Superintendent
of the Sunday school and ever ready to aid and forward
any undertaking calculated to benefit or stimulate the
intellectual or moral improvement of the community.
Mr. Rathbun was married Nov. 18. 1863. to Miss Eliza
beth Burt, of Auburn. X. Y.; she was born March 12. 1840.
died Aug. 19. 1871: married, second. Miss Bunella McMurrich.
daughter of the late Hon. John McMurrich. Toronto.
June 11. 1873: she was born June II, 1853. His family consists
