), born March 27, 1758. in Coventry; lived in Richland,<br />

Otsego Co.,- X. Y. He was a soldier in theRevolutionary<br />

war and it is said that in one engagement, being shot through<br />

the neck, was left for dead on the field. His captain sent six<br />

men to bring him oft"; they found him alive and pressing each<br />

opening to stop the flow of blood. He was removed to a<br />

place of safety and finally recovered. His mother, a<br />

Quaker, on his return home said to him: ''You should be<br />

thankful to the Lord for the preservation of your life," whereupon<br />

his reply was "rather to the captain of the volunteers,<br />

who brought me away." He married Robinson: they<br />
