2.2.2 Selection criteria<br />

HTA (Health Technology Assessm<strong>en</strong>t) reports and systematic reviews were selected<br />

according to the following criteria:<br />

P: pati<strong>en</strong>ts suffering from any condition<br />

I: homeopathy<br />

C: any comparison: alternative interv<strong>en</strong>tion, placebo<br />

O: pati<strong>en</strong>t relevant outcomes, such as mortality, morbidity, quality of life<br />

D: HTA reports or systematic reviews<br />

Exclusion criteria:<br />

Narrative reviews, editorials, letters, primary studies, economic evaluations. Only<br />

publications in English, Fr<strong>en</strong>ch, German, Dutch, Spanish or Portuguese were eligible for<br />

inclusion in the pres<strong>en</strong>t report. Other languages were thus exclu<strong>de</strong>d. Search date of the<br />

review <strong>en</strong>ding before the year 2000.<br />

2.2.3 Quality assessm<strong>en</strong>t.<br />

The quality of systematic reviews was assessed using the checklist <strong>de</strong>veloped by the<br />

Dutch Cochrane collaboration b . The following 8 items listed are: a<strong>de</strong>quate research<br />

question, a<strong>de</strong>quate literature search, a<strong>de</strong>quate selection, a<strong>de</strong>quate quality appraisal,<br />

a<strong>de</strong>quate data-extraction, characteristics primary studies, a<strong>de</strong>quate handling of clinical<br />

and statistical heterog<strong>en</strong>eity, correct statistical pooling. In the table they are numbered<br />

from 1 to 8.<br />

In addition, wh<strong>en</strong> several systematic reviews were available on a specific sub-topic, the<br />

findings of the systematic review with the highest quality rating, most rec<strong>en</strong>t literature<br />

search or most compreh<strong>en</strong>sive scope (in that or<strong>de</strong>r of importance) were reported and<br />

were compared with the results of the other systematic reviews on that topic<br />

2.3 RESULTS<br />

2.3.1 Reports and papers found<br />

The number of papers found initially and selected in the <strong>en</strong>d are giv<strong>en</strong> in figure one.<br />

Evaluation of the studies is giv<strong>en</strong> in table 1.<br />
