maintained for thirty years a deservedly high reputation.
He was for several years elected to the common council and
then called to rill the responsible position of Chief Magistrate
of the city, being the last mayor chosen by the council
and the first mayor elected by a vote of the people. He
was a director of the State Bank of Albany and the Albany
Insurance Company. Mr. Rathbone belonged to a class
of merchants to whose intelligence, enterprise and liberality
Albany is greatly indebted for its prosperitv, its improvements
and institutions. Children:

California, Feb. 20, 1871. He graduated from the United States Military
Academy (West Point), and was made Second Lieutenant of the
Twelfth Infantry, June 23, 1S65: he was promoted as First Lieut, of Artillery
Mar. 5, 1869: he served several years on the staff of General
Schoffield: he resigned from the service June 28. 1872. On April II,
188S. he was confirmed bv the United States Senate. Counsel General
at Paris, France, by a vote o; 44 to 8. to which honorable position he
had been nominated by President Grover Cleveland; he had one son,
