April. 26. i66t), "John <strong>Rathbone</strong>, an old Army Colonel, and sev-<br />

eral others, who had been officers, or soldiers in the late Rebiilion<br />

convicted of high treason at the "Old Baily" in conspiracy to take<br />

the tower, under the General, susprise the guards, and t-'rt the city:<br />

all of which was to have been executed on the 3d of September, a day<br />

deemed lucky to the faction; and, however, the rest of the plot mis-<br />

carried, that part relating to the firing of the city was unhappily put<br />

in execution by their brethren, the Fanatics, and then thrown upon the<br />

Papists. <strong>Rathbone</strong> and the other prisoners were executed at Lyburn,<br />

"Talman's Chronological Historian", born 17.33: (see aiso Ernard's<br />

History of England). Col. <strong>Rathbone</strong> is a character in James, (,or<br />

Horace). Smith's clever novel "Brambletree House.'"<br />

John <strong>Rathbone</strong> was mayor of the city of Chester 150,3 1 which<br />

of itself a county) in the County Paletine of Cheshire in 1514 and 1519-<br />

He had been sheriff in 1503.<br />

Richard <strong>Rathbone</strong> was sheriff of Chester. 1582. he is called " Mer-<br />

chant." He was mayor 1598. Tomb in Church of Holy Trinity in<br />

Chester. Thomas <strong>Rathbone</strong>. Esq., was sheriff in Chester in 1700 'md<br />

mayor 1806.. died an alderman in Chester, July. 1815 1<br />

The distinguished family of <strong>Rathbone</strong> of Liverpool, probably<br />

derives from the Chester stock. They own landed property in<br />

Che-hire. 1573.<br />

Aaron <strong>Rathbone</strong> wrote a book on surveying. 1616. a copy ot<br />

which is still in the possession of the family, and vs in the private-<br />

library of Aaron <strong>Rathbone</strong> of New York City. The book is of the<br />

folio size and contains a large portrait of the author (Aaron; in steel.<br />

with the following inscription in Latin encircling the portrait: "Gv\<br />

in me vivt Pro Me Mortus. Anno Salutis Xostiri 1616."<br />

There is also another portrait in steel of Prince Charles, winch<br />

is encircled by the following: Prince of Wales. Duke of Cornwall. York.<br />

Marquis of Ormont. &c. The work contains numerous diagrams, and<br />

illustrations and was very elaborately and expensively printed. The<br />

Atlo page being of the finest if not the most elaborate of the time 1"-.<br />

The book is entitled the " Surveyors " in four books by Aaron<br />

<strong>Rathbone</strong>, London. Printed by W. Stansly for W. Bune 1616 The<br />

book is dedicated to Prince Charles. The dedication, is as follows:<br />
