), born Dec. 23. 1724. Wed-<br />

nesday, 2 o'clock P. M.: married Tabatha Brown, daughter<br />

of Humphrey, whose father was Daniel, who emigrated from<br />

England about 1620. He had a son Daniel who had seven<br />

children, one of whom Samuel had a daughter Mary who<br />

married, first. William Palmer, who died . she then<br />

married Captain Wait <strong>Rathbone</strong>. brother of Rev. Valentine<br />

<strong>Rathbone</strong>. Rev. John <strong>Rathbone</strong> another hrother ot Valentine's<br />

married Content, sister of Tabatha and Mary Brown.<br />

Lydia. another sister of Tabatha married Simeon Sperbank,<br />

who was lost at sea. His daughter Lydia married Samuel<br />

<strong>Rathbone</strong>, son of Joshua, the son of Jonathan, the son of<br />

John and Ann Dodge. Valentine R. left Rhode Island and<br />

settled at Pittsfield in 1769, and became the minister of the<br />

Baptist Church which he founded in \~~±- He carried on<br />

the clothing business in Pittsfield. On Feb. 12, 1770.<br />

Henry Wan Schaack sold to Valentine <strong>Rathbone</strong> lands. Deed<br />

dated June 10. 1701. witness Ruth Longworthy. In 1779<br />

he was teaching elder of the Shaker- at Pittsfield. Mass He<br />

deeded lands to Joseph Dart in 1800: Reuben <strong>Rathbone</strong>.<br />

witness. Valentine, then of Pittsfield. Mass.. deeded to<br />

Rufus Coggeswell of Richmond, dated Nov. 5. i8or. book<br />

40. page 12. He built clothier works in Pittsfield. 1769.<br />

Elder Valentine <strong>Rathbone</strong> the pastor of the Baptist church<br />

organized in 1772. was no less ardent in his patriotism, than<br />

his congregational brothers. A clothier by trade he had<br />

without abandoning that pursuit and without the advantages<br />

of a classical education founded the church to which he min-<br />

istered from proselytes made by his own preaching in his<br />

own house. The results of his speaking indicate that its
