profession to accept the cashiership of the Merchants and<br />

Mechanics' Bank in the city of Troy, in 1827.<br />

In 1829, he was made cashier of the Chemical Bank of<br />

New York, where he removed with his family. Tn 1S29. he<br />

was elected cashier of the Merchants and Mechanics' Bank of<br />

Troy, X. Y.. upon which he resigned the cashiership of the<br />

Chemical Bank and removed back to Troy, and entered upon<br />

his new duties as cashier, which he continued to do until<br />

1836, when he resigned and was succeeded by his son Charles<br />

S. He retired from business at the age of fifty, ^ with unimpaired<br />

mental and physical powers. He died, at his home in<br />

Troy, April 19. iSs6; his widow survived him until Feb 2S<br />

1869.<br />

The will of Alanson Douglas, drawn by himself, was a<br />

long and admirably written instrument, on its first publica-<br />

tion excited much curiosity, and attracted the attention of<br />

legal and financial circles. Among its provisions after providing<br />

annuities for his brothers and sisters he left a bequest<br />

of $100,000. to be equally divided among his nephews and<br />

nieces in eight equal annual payments. He had six children:<br />

his degree of master in 1835.<br />

4. Charles Selden. b. Aug. 17. 1812; m. Sarah A. Hollister.<br />

5. William Bradley, b. Dec. 26, 1818; m. Charlotte Cornelia<br />

Dickens Ferris.<br />

6. Julia, b. Sept. 17. 1823; m. George Merritt, a merchant in New<br />

York city.<br />

in Lansingburg, N. Y.. Oct. 25, 1804. graduated from Yale<br />

1825. He was ordained to the sacred ministry in the Protestant<br />

Episcopal church in 1826; married Dec. 10. 1827. to<br />

Harriet L.. daughter of Seth and Catherine \V. Staples of<br />

New Haven. Conn. He was for a brief period settled. at<br />

Georgetown. D. C. while there he received a call to St.<br />

Paul's church, Rochester, N. Y., and entered on his duties<br />

Nov. 23. following. He received priest's orders from Bishop<br />

Hobart in St. John's church in the city of New York; of<br />

naturally delicate constitution he was constrained<br />

to seek health in foreign travel. Travel and rest
