that it was fiery and vehement and nervous. His fellow citizens<br />

manifested esteem for his character and his talents by<br />

electing him to represent them in county congress over<br />

which he often presided and at interesting crises to the general<br />

living with him. Reuben joined the Shakers and lived some time with<br />

them and became one of their elders. Becoming disgusted with thetn,<br />

he left, and wrote a book, title, "Reasons for Leaving Them." Signed<br />

Reuben <strong>Rathbone</strong>.<br />

JOSHUA 7 RATHBONE (Valentine . Joshua 5 . John*,<br />

John3 , John 2 . Richard 1<br />

), born June 21. 1746; married Eliza-<br />

beth Hall of Xewport. R. I.; she was the daughter of Benjamin;<br />

she was horn in Xewport in 1747 and died there April<br />

13, 178S; he married, second. Ann Sears in Xewport. R. I.,<br />

Nov. 13, [788; she was the daughter of George and Abigail<br />

(Hall) Sears, sister of first wife; she was born Jan. 7. I/69,<br />

and died there March 30. 1794. Joshua was a sea captain in<br />

the employ of Gibbs & Chamerey, merchants of Xewport, R.<br />

I., for whom he sailed for many years, being tired of the sea<br />

and having saved some money he determined to purchase a<br />

farm and retire from sea service. He was taken suddenly<br />

sick and died after a short illness. Sept. 5. 1799. Children:<br />
