KARAHNJUKAR<br />
VA TECH HYDRO W<strong>in</strong>s Order for Turb<strong>in</strong>es, Generators and<br />
all Electrical Equipment for Power Plant <strong>in</strong> Iceland<br />
This is the second major order<br />
that VA TECH HYDRO has won <strong>in</strong><br />
Iceland. At the end of the 90's the<br />
company also supplied the<br />
electromechanical equipment for<br />
Sultartangi <strong>hydro</strong>electric power<br />
plant (2 x 65 MW).<br />
Kárahnjúkar <strong>hydro</strong>electric power<br />
plant with an <strong>in</strong>stalled output of<br />
690 MW and an annual energy production<br />
of 4,450 GWh (the equi<strong>va</strong>lent<br />
of the annual energy consumption<br />
of approx. 1 million households)<br />
is needed to supply power to an<br />
alum<strong>in</strong>ium plant (Alcoa/USA). The<br />
power plant will allow for the<br />
production of 320,000 tonnes of<br />
alum<strong>in</strong>ium a year us<strong>in</strong>g environmentally<br />
friendly energy.<br />
The plant is located <strong>in</strong> the under-<strong>in</strong>dustrialized<br />
east of Iceland, some<br />
670 km from the capital Reykjavik.<br />
The national power company<br />
Landsvirkjun is responsible for the<br />
construction of the power plant and<br />
will also operate it. Iceland meets its<br />
entire energy requirements with<br />
renewable sources of energy. In<br />
addition to geothermal plants,<br />
<strong>hydro</strong>electric power also plays a<br />
major role <strong>in</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g Iceland's<br />
power needs. Kárahnjúkar power<br />
plant will <strong>in</strong>crease the <strong>in</strong>stalled<br />
output of <strong>hydro</strong>electric power by<br />

KEY PROJECTS<br />
almost 70%. This fact alone demonstrates<br />
the tremendous importance<br />
of this power plant for the country<br />
and the region <strong>in</strong> which it will be<br />
built. The project is one of the<br />
largest <strong>in</strong>vestment projects <strong>in</strong> Iceland's<br />
history. The planned total <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />
runs to USD 3 billion (<strong>hydro</strong>electric<br />
power plant and<br />
alum<strong>in</strong>ium smelt<strong>in</strong>g plant), a sum<br />
which is equi<strong>va</strong>lent to approximately<br />
one third of Iceland's gross domestic<br />
product. The project will also<br />
break other records. Kárahnjúkar<br />
power plant will be fed by the melt<br />
water from Europe’s largest glacier,<br />
the Vatnajökull. With a height of<br />
190 m and a length of 750 m the<br />
dam of the Hálslón Reservoir (approx.<br />
57 km2) is the highest concrete<br />
faced rockfill dam <strong>in</strong> Europe.<br />
Currently three large tunnell<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es<br />
from the Italian company Impregilio<br />
are drill<strong>in</strong>g the access of the<br />
approximately 53 km long tunnel to<br />
the powerhouse. The German company<br />
Hochtief and local Icelandic<br />
contractors have been hired to construct<br />
the access tunnels and the<br />
cavern. The high level of customer<br />
satisfaction and confidence <strong>in</strong> the<br />
quality of VA TECH products for<br />
<strong>hydro</strong>electric plants were important<br />
criteria for award<strong>in</strong>g the new<br />
contract to VA TECH HYDRO. The<br />
scope of supply basically comprises<br />
the six high-head Francis<br />
turb<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g digital speed<br />
governor system, the generators<br />
with static excitation, the generator<br />
switchgear, the generator ma<strong>in</strong><br />
leads and the electrical equipment<br />
for the power plant <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g protection<br />
accord<strong>in</strong>g to NEPTUN<br />
system. VA TECH HYDRO also<br />
supplies shut-off <strong>va</strong>lves, draft tube<br />
gates and cranes, the cool<strong>in</strong>g water<br />
supply system, oil clean<strong>in</strong>g system,<br />
fire ext<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g plant, dra<strong>in</strong>age,<br />
emergency diesel generator, 400 kV<br />
distribution, direct current supply,<br />
control system, protection and cabl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
The project will be carried out<br />
over a period of 3.5 years. Installation<br />
will commence <strong>in</strong> early 2005<br />
while commission<strong>in</strong>g is scheduled<br />
for early 2007. The plant will be<br />
handed over to the customer for<br />
commercial operation <strong>in</strong> July 2007.<br />
