About 250 people attended the
customer day at the end of August
2003 at the VA TECH HYDRO
premises in Lucerne/Kriens to
learn about new developments,
products and services.
One of the so-called "Points of Interest"
for visitors from the electrical industry
was a presentation of state-ofthe-art
turbine technology, primary
and secondary electronics and water
technology. A series of lectures and
presentations were held on various
topics such as power plant operation,
modernization and control systems;
additional information was provided
on substations and transformers.
Hydro Service with special
solutions
Some remarkable projects were
presented in the Hydro Service area:
currently preparations are under way
to retrofit a vertical Kaplan turbine at
Reckingen power plant. The plan is
to enlarge the runner from 6,200 to
6,450 mm including replacement of
the wearing plate and the guide wheel.
In fact, enlarging the runner blade creates
an obstacle to the mounting
work. However, this problem will be
circumvented by means of bevelled
slits in the upper, concrete-encased
guide wheel and subsequently engaging
the rotor in corkscrew fashion. The
time frame is also remarkable: the turbine
is to be back in operation in just
21 weeks! The turbine’s annual efficiency
should increase by 3%.
Strong selling for MicroGuss TM
The interest generated by the runners
on display confirmed that the demand
for MicroGussTM remains strong. It is
also impressive how many runners
have been manufactured or ordered
since the first one in 1992, for
Luchsingen power plant owned by
Glarus utility. 159 runners were delivered
by August 2003 (approximately
140 of which are already in operation)
and 46 runners are currently under
construction. A total of 1.6 million
hours of operation without disruption
in 20 countries around the world is
quite an achievement!
Market success for VA TECH SAT
VA TECH SAT, the leading supplier of

SAT is very successful with both
VA TECH systems in Switzerland.
