First MicroGuss TM Pelton runner<br />

for Société Hydroélectrique du<br />

Midi (SHEM).<br />

The French customer SHEM based <strong>in</strong><br />

Paris and Toulouse (part of SNCF<br />

railways) ordered from VA TECH<br />

HYDRO Switzerland a Pelton Micro-<br />

Guss TM runner for Miègebat power<br />

plant situated <strong>in</strong> the occidental Pyrenees.<br />

This new MicroGuss TM Pelton<br />

runner replaces a cast iron runner,<br />

which has been <strong>in</strong> service for over<br />

30 years. We could conv<strong>in</strong>ce the<br />

customer that a Micro-Guss TM<br />

runner would be the best solution<br />

for his long term <strong>in</strong>vestment. This is<br />

the first MicroGuss TM Pelton runner<br />

to be delivered to this important<br />

French customer (number 3 after<br />

EDF and CNR) who has about<br />

50 Pelton runners <strong>in</strong> operation. The<br />

runner should commence <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />

operation <strong>in</strong> August 2004, after completion<br />

of the efficiency verification<br />

tests.<br />

CHANCY POUGNY<br />

Based on model turb<strong>in</strong>e tests<br />

carried out <strong>in</strong> 2000/2001 <strong>in</strong> the<br />

hydraulic laboratory of VA TECH<br />

HYDRO <strong>in</strong> Vevey, Switzerland,<br />

which showed higher turb<strong>in</strong>e efficiencies<br />

than guaranteed. On<br />

October 10, 2003 we received a<br />

letter of <strong>in</strong>tent from the Société<br />

des Forces Motrices de Chancy<br />

Pougny for the rehabilitation of<br />

turb<strong>in</strong>e generator units 1 and 2 of<br />

Chancy Pougny power plant.<br />

This rehabilitation consists of<br />

replac<strong>in</strong>g one or two Francis units<br />

of a total of five hav<strong>in</strong>g been <strong>in</strong><br />

service s<strong>in</strong>ce 1925 with two new<br />

Kaplan units. The contract for the<br />

rehabilitation of two units was confirmed<br />

at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of 2004. It<br />

will be realized <strong>in</strong> a consortium with<br />

ALSTOM and VA TECH HYDRO as<br />

project leader.<br />

PORTODEMOUROS<br />

Work was successfully completed<br />

at Portodemouros plant <strong>in</strong> December<br />

2003 with the plant be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

handed over to Unión Fenosa after<br />

commission<strong>in</strong>g of the equipment.<br />

In May 2002, VA TECH HYDRO <strong>in</strong><br />

Spa<strong>in</strong> was awarded a contract by<br />

Soluziona Ingeniería, S.A., the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

company of the Union<br />

Fenosa group, for the supply, <strong>in</strong>stal-<br />

lation and commission<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />

electromechanical equipment for<br />

the Portodemouros plant (ecological<br />

flow), located <strong>in</strong> Pontevedra<br />

prov<strong>in</strong>ce, Galicia region, <strong>in</strong> northwest<br />

Spa<strong>in</strong>. Union Fenosa is the<br />

third ma<strong>in</strong> utility <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>. VA TECH<br />

HYDRO’s scope of supply <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

1 penstock ND 1800 and 20 m long,<br />

a dewater<strong>in</strong>g pipe ND 2400 and 35<br />

m long, 1 vertical 11 MW Francis<br />

turb<strong>in</strong>e, 1 water-cooled generator, 1<br />

butterfly <strong>va</strong>lve ND 1700 NP12, 1<br />

gate <strong>va</strong>lve ND 1600 and governor<br />

system. This exist<strong>in</strong>g power station,<br />

owned by Union Fenosa, is located<br />

<strong>in</strong>side a cavern exca<strong>va</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> the<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong> beside the dam. The exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

units are vertical Francis, with<br />

an output of 39 MW each. The connection<br />

to one of the exist<strong>in</strong>g penstocks<br />

was made with a special bifurcation<br />

piece. All equipment<br />

supplied by VA TECH HYDRO (turb<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

<strong>va</strong>lves, generator, penstock,<br />

etc.) is located below the ground<br />

level of the power station, <strong>in</strong> several<br />

tunnels and pits exca<strong>va</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> the<br />

soil. For this reason and because of<br />

the small dimensions of the exca<strong>va</strong>ted<br />

area, all transport, handl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and erection work was extremely<br />

complicated and required very careful<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ation with civil work.<br />

Soluziona signed the provisional<br />

acceptance and confirmed their<br />

satisfaction with the timely completion<br />

of the project. We expect to<br />

work together with this company <strong>in</strong><br />

several new projects to be started <strong>in</strong><br />

2004.<br />
