for the supply of Kaplan turb<strong>in</strong>es for two power stations<br />

Iberdrola has awarded a contract<br />

for two power stations to VA TECH<br />

HYDRO <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>, follow<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

long term collaboration of this<br />

utility with our company <strong>in</strong><br />

Madrid.<br />

FONTANAR I & II<br />

Iberdrola is one of the global key<br />

accounts of the VA TECH group and<br />

the lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>hydro</strong>power utility <strong>in</strong><br />

Spa<strong>in</strong> (and third <strong>in</strong> Europe). Their<br />

8,000 MW <strong>in</strong>stalled power (more than<br />

200 stations and 400 units) represent<br />

50% of the total <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>hydro</strong>power<br />

<strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> and 10% of the total <strong>in</strong> the<br />

European Union.<br />

VA TECH HYDRO <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> collaborated<br />

with Iberdrola <strong>in</strong> many other im-<br />

portant projects <strong>in</strong> the past. These<br />

two power stations are located near<br />

each other, <strong>in</strong> a hydraulic system<br />

called Aqueduct Tajo-Segura. This<br />

important system takes the<br />

water from the Tajo River, <strong>in</strong> central<br />

Spa<strong>in</strong>, and delivers it <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the Segura river, 400<br />

km away, to be used for<br />

agricultural purposes<br />

and dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water supply<br />

<strong>in</strong> the dry southeast<br />

region of Spa<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The order covers the<br />

complete electromechanical<br />

supply of<br />

these plants, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• 2 Kaplan turb<strong>in</strong>es with a runner<br />

diameter of 1.950 mm<br />

•2 generators<br />

•2 butterfly <strong>va</strong>lves ND 2500<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g VA TECH HYDRO’s<br />

“Water to Wire” concept, the supply<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes the complete electrical<br />

package, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g cab<strong>in</strong>ets for protection,<br />

medium voltage and auxiliary<br />

services, DC batteries, light<strong>in</strong>g, etc.<br />

The turb<strong>in</strong>e design is identical for<br />

KEY PROJECTS<br />

both plants. Thanks to the <strong>va</strong>st<br />

selection of exist<strong>in</strong>g designs with<strong>in</strong><br />

VA TECH HYDRO’s Compact range,<br />

we have taken ad<strong>va</strong>ntage of the<br />

a<strong>va</strong>ilable detail eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g already<br />

developed for a similar plant.<br />

For these reasons, we could offer a<br />

very short delivery time as an additional<br />

benefit for our client.<br />
