The lovely village of Fuschl with
its stunning lake near the famous
city of Salzburg, Austria,
was the stage for last year’s
Energy Symposium organized
and sponsored by VERBUND,
the main electricity company of
Austria.
The Symposium may be characterized
as an acknowledged future-oriented
energy platform. The main
topic of the event was the discussion
about energy investment
opportunities. Other topics included
solutions for human-oriented
energy planning and new ways to
tap new technological innovation
potentials. All these ideas were
highlighted under a changed energy
investment framework.
About 150 top managers from the
regional electricity industry as well
as some international experts
participated in the Symposium and
many presentations were held. At
that time the main issues were the
big blackouts in USA and some
countries in Europe. And as
Mr. Hans Haider, CEO of VERBUND
and President of the Union of the
Electricity Industry – EURELECTRIC,

Energy Symposium 2003 in Fuschl, Austria

clear that big investments in power
plants and grid stability are seen as
urgent and indispensable now.

additional capacity of renewable
energy in order to meet the challenging
Kyoto objectives.
Of course, for Mr. Strohmer, the focus
in his presentation was mainly
on hydropower and its possible
contributions to slow down the climate
change. And anyone who
knows VA TECH HYDRO is aware of
the fact that this company has a

storage power plants, refurbishment
of existing power plants,

Also other acknowledged international
experts expressed the opinion
that hydropower seems to be
the only short and medium-term solution
for substantial worldwide CO2
