We are sometimes asked what our
strapline – sustainable solutions,
for a better life – actually means in
practice.
In fact, it guides everything we do. The
aim is to achieve a permanent increase
in company value, leading to long-term
improvement in people’s life quality,
through responsible behaviour and the
development of future-proof solutions.
Obviously, sustainability is a competitive
factor – an international race for
emission certificates is already developing.
There’s increasing pressure by
financing agencies and guarantee
providers. Banks and capital investors
are placing increased emphasis on
ecological and social risk factors.
And more and more investment funds
operate according to social and environmental
criteria.
Practical examples
Take Colombia’s Rio Amoya project.
This hydroelectric run-off river power
plant will have an installed capacity of
80 MW and an annual energy production
of 568 GWh. It will considerably
help to reduce CO2 emissions and
protect the flora and fauna of the Las
Hermosas national park and the
Paramo plateau through the use of
clean hydropower. As consortium
leader VA TECH HYDRO will supply the
entire electromechanical package. It is
so important to the region that it won
the Energy Globe Award for sustainable
energy. Or consider how we are leading
the efforts to promote the use of
hydropower inclimate protection. Together
with our consortium partners
Verbundplan and Alpine Mayreder, we
signed contracts in October 2003 with
the Bulgarian company Natsionalna
Elektricheska Kompania (NEK) for providing
equipment to the Tsankov
Kamak hydropower plant. What makes
this endeavour so special is that it is being
developed as a climate protection
project and therefore receives supplemental
financing from emission certificates.
In the first Kyoto target period
lasting from 2008 to 2012, certificates
are being generated and transferred
to the Austrian government for some
1 million tons of CO2. That is about
one sixth of what the Austrian industry
must contribute to the Kyoto target
under the 2000 climate strategy. In the
meantime, the project has been recognized
and approved by an international
validation institute. Not only that, but in
May 2004, VA TECH HYDRO won the
prestigious company award TRIGOS
for the Tsankov Kamak project, a prize

that for the first time was given to companies
with special social responsibility
by the association “Corporate Social
Responsibility Austria”. For us, Tsankov
Kamak is just the beginning of these efforts
and further projects are already
being planned. We would like to thank
