MANDRAKA<br />

In November 2003, VA TECH<br />

HYDRO <strong>in</strong> France was entrusted<br />

with the rehabilitation of the<br />

<strong>hydro</strong>electric power plant <strong>in</strong>-<br />

Mandraka, Madagascar. Restart<br />

is planned for November 2004.<br />

KEY PROJECTS<br />

The client is the public company<br />

JIRO SY RANO MALAGASY (JIRAMA).<br />

The project has been developed<br />

with European f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g (BEI).<br />

The project is situated 70 km from<br />

Antananarivo, on the road l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the capital with the harbour of<br />

Toamas<strong>in</strong>a. The head of Mandraka,<br />

the river by the same name,<br />

uses a first drop of 250 m with 70<br />

million m3 deriv<strong>in</strong>g from Mantasoa,<br />

to which a contribution of 55 million<br />

m3 of the Mandraka is added.<br />

Mantasoa is located at the border of<br />

the first step of the Eastern cliff <strong>in</strong><br />

the proximity of the watershed.<br />

The power station is currently<br />

equipped with four Vevey Pelton<br />

units <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> 1958 (unit power<br />

6 MW) for a head of 250 m. Each<br />

group is equipped with two runners<br />

on the same turb<strong>in</strong>e shaft, with two<br />

<strong>in</strong>jectors per runner. The rehabilitation<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>cipally <strong>in</strong>cludes the supply<br />

of four new Pelton runners, two new<br />

turb<strong>in</strong>e shafts, four new oil tanks<br />

with accumulators, two new speed<br />

governors, the rehabilitation of mechanical<br />

components as well as an<br />

electrical assembly compris<strong>in</strong>g<br />

transformers, switchgear and electrical<br />

equipment with our partner<br />

CEGELEC.<br />

This project is very important for the<br />

island of Madagascar because it<br />

represents on its own 12% of the <strong>in</strong>stalled<br />

electrical power alone. This<br />

rehabilitation concern<strong>in</strong>g the four<br />

groups (with different supplies for<br />

each group) should therefore be<br />

done step by step <strong>in</strong> order to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

maximum power generation<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the construction period.<br />

VA TECH HYDRO <strong>in</strong> France will lead<br />

this project to the end us<strong>in</strong>g all<br />

the competences of the VA TECH<br />

HYDRO group to ensure the<br />

quality required under the terms of<br />

contract.<br />
