TOULNUSTOUC
Realized within the framework of
the order to VA TECH HYDRO in
Vevey for the turbine governors for
the two Francis turbines, "the
Hydro Quebec homologation” of
the new governor head Neptun-TC
1703 will allow VA TECH HYDRO to
be qualified as a preferential supplier
of HYDRO QUEBEC for governing
systems for hydraulic turbines.
This homologation process, very
similar to the one followed by EDF,
consists of two aspects, which aim
at checking the robustness of the
product on the one hand (norm
SN1008), and its performanc on the
other hand (norm SN38.1). At the end
of September, the functional tests
were successfully performed with
the participation of the Hydro
Quebec specialists on the Vevey test
platform. Validation on site will be
done during the commissioning in
2004. The robustness tests of the
electronic components will be executed
soon at the VA TECH SAT test
laboratory in Vienna.
BRADLEY LAKE
The ACP Department of VA TECH
HYDRO USA is currently working
on the recently awarded contract
for Electronic Governor Retrofit for
the two governors of the Bradley
Lake project.
The contract was awarded in October
2003 by Homer Electric Association.
The project includes assessment of
the existing power oscillations, engineering,
supply of new deflector and
needle control valves and electronic
control modules, installation, supervision,
and performance tests for both
units in the plant. Additional work was
authorized in January 2004, including
model testing and engineering to
solve deflector problems. The plant
location is very remote, and is accessible
only by air or water. Inclement
weather can have a significant impact
on the time required to get to the plant
and perform the required work.
VA TECH HYDRO was awarded the
contract based on our advanced technologies
and the overall value of the
solution to the owner. The engineering
for the project is currently under way,
and the equipment will be delivered
and installed in May 2005. This is an
important reference for VA TECH
HYDRO, and should lead to several
similar projects for clients with governor
stability problems, especially in
the western region of the US.
Technical data:
Output: 63.1 MW
FLAMING GORGE
The US Bureau of Reclamation has
awarded VA TECH HYDRO USA a
contract for the supply of three
new Francis runners for Flaming
Gorge hydropower plant, located
in Utah in the US.
The scope of supply includes a
model test, new runners, new wicket
gates, and the refurbishment of
all other mechanical parts VA TECH
HYDRO USA will have a crew and
supervisors on site for the duration
of the contract. One of the primary
reasons for VA TECH to win the
contract was the high efficiency of
the units, and the resulting high
return on investment for the Bureau.
Runner delivery will start in 2005
with the remaining units to be
supplied over a period of two years.
The Bureau of Reclamation is one of
the key customers in the US market.
VA TECH HYDRO is currently
performing rehabilitation work for
the Bureau at Grand Coulee, and
our customer-pleasing performance
also had a positive influence on the
Flaming Gorge award.
COSTA RICA
LA GARITA
Performance tests successfully
completed.
The two Francis units of La Garita
HPP, owned by INSTITUTO
COSTARRICENSE DE ELECTRICIDAD
(ICE), were extensively refurbished
within the framework of a joint refurbishment
project between VA
TECH HYDRO in Vevey and Vienna
for the generators and Mexico for
the control and governing systems.
With respect to the turbines, runners,
distributors and shafts have
been replaced, together with an
overhaul of the hydraulic surfaces
of all other components. New governors,
cooling systems and equipment
for operation in synchronous
condensers have also been installed.
Following the release of unit
1 for commercial operation on February
10, 2003 and unit 2 on December
19, 2002, performance
tests of the turbines and generators
were completed. The thermodynamic
method used to measure the
turbine performance was applied
under very special conditions. Indeed,
