HYDROMATRIX ® as best solution
With the planned realization of a
small-scale hydropower plant near
the Schemerl Weir at the intake of
the Vienna Danube Canal, Verbund-
Austria Hydro Power and its project
partners EVN and Wienstrom,
have sent an important signal concerning
the best possible use of
hydropower.
Location of plant
The idea of using the Danube Canal for
the generation of power is closely
related to the construction of Freudenau
power station on the Danube.
Concepts for the use of the banked-up
waters of the new power station by
means of a small-scale hydropower
plant near the existing weirs at the intake
of the Danube Canal (Schemerl
Weir) were considered already at the
end of the 1990s. However, at that
time this project was not pursued
for economic reasons.
The realization of the “Nussdorf
small-scale hydropower plant” project
first became economically viable
following the passing of new “green
power” legislation and the availability
of the new HYDROMATRIX ® technology.
A major feature of the project is its
careful integration into the existing
Nussdorf Weir building complex designed
by the famous Jugendstil
architect Otto Wagner.
The contract will be executed by
VA TECH HYDRO together with Porr
Technobau and Verbundplan as
consortium leader.
The small-scale hydropower plant
consists of a 30 m long, approx. 12 m
wide and 7 m high over-flow hollow
body weir with attached pneumatically
operated spillway gates, twelve
HYDROMATRIX ® turbine generator
units and an operation building.
With the HYDROMATRIX ® concept it is
now possible to comply with the existing
weir operating procedure and
secure the required flow for navigation
at all times of the year.
KEY PROJECTS
The HYDROMATRIX ® plant is scheduled
to commence supply of electricity already
in summer 2005. From today’s perspective,
the electricity produced will meet
the needs of about 7,500 households.
