the results achieved with our own<br />

measur<strong>in</strong>g system. The pressure<br />

and temperature measurements<br />

were thus doubled and postprocessed<br />

by two <strong>in</strong>dependent acquisition<br />

systems. The measurements<br />

were completed <strong>in</strong><br />

accordance with the IEC recommendations,<br />

publication 41. It was<br />

thus possible to verify that the contractual<br />

weighted efficiency of more<br />

than 94% was <strong>in</strong>deed reached. Ow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to favourable measur<strong>in</strong>g conditions,<br />

the efficiency differences between<br />

the two systems for all ten<br />

measurements never exceeded<br />

0.12% and the measured weighted<br />

efficiencies thus def<strong>in</strong>ed showed a<br />

difference of only 0.03%. The contractual<br />

guarantees were thus verified<br />

twice and the positive results<br />

confirmed, despite a repartition of<br />

mechanical losses that was penalis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the turb<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

PERU<br />

MANTARO<br />

Due to bucket failures on cast runners<br />

recently delivered by another<br />

manufacturer, ELECTROPERU, the<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> Peruvian energy producer,<br />

decided to order 4 MicroGuss TM<br />

Pelton runners from VA TECH<br />

HYDRO after an <strong>in</strong>ternational bidd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

process based on forged<br />

runners.<br />

Mantaro HEPP, with its 7 units generat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

25% of Peru’s electricity, is<br />

the most important power plant of<br />

the country. Due to the strategic importance<br />

of Mantaro, the customer<br />

decided to bid for forged runners.<br />

VA TECH HYDRO’s experience and<br />

reliability were key factors dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the e<strong>va</strong>luation process. This is another<br />

success for the MicroGuss TM<br />

<strong>tech</strong>nology. In addition to the runners,<br />

VA TECH HYDRO will supply<br />

the coupl<strong>in</strong>g bolts, transport, the<br />

runner <strong>in</strong>stallation and four site efficiency<br />

tests. First delivery is<br />

planned for the end of 2004.<br />

KHAULI<br />

Himachal Pradesh Electricity<br />

Board (HPSEB) ordered from<br />

VA TECH HYDRO Faridabad<br />

(India) a fully homologous model<br />

of the horizontal 2-jet Pelton<br />

Compact turb<strong>in</strong>e under construction<br />

<strong>in</strong> north India. The model<br />

tests confirmed the top efficiency<br />

level of the turb<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

VA TECH HYDRO’s best knowhow<br />

<strong>in</strong> Pelton design.<br />

Tak<strong>in</strong>g ad<strong>va</strong>ntage of the latest developments<br />

<strong>in</strong> Pelton design and ref<strong>in</strong>ement<br />

of each hydraulic component,<br />

all <strong>tech</strong>nical guarantees have<br />

been fulfilled. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the model tests<br />

at VA TECH HYDRO’s hydraulic lab-<br />

HIGHLIGHTS<br />

oratory <strong>in</strong> Vevey, our customer could<br />

witness the perfect hydraulic behaviour<br />

of the turb<strong>in</strong>es over the whole<br />

operat<strong>in</strong>g range and verify that the<br />

contractual guaranteed runaway<br />

speed was met. These good results<br />

will help HPSEB to further manage<br />

the project <strong>in</strong> collaboration with<br />

VA TECH HYDRO <strong>in</strong> Faridabad (India)<br />

with a higher level of serenity. The<br />

KHAULI project will also represent a<br />

new local reference for VA TECH<br />

HYDRO <strong>in</strong> the fast grow<strong>in</strong>g Indian<br />

market. Commission<strong>in</strong>g of both<br />

turnkey units is scheduled for 2005.<br />

SOUTH AFRICA<br />

VANDERKLOOF<br />

Vanderkloof <strong>hydro</strong>power station is<br />

located <strong>in</strong> the heart of the Free<br />

State, South Africa.<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g one of two large run-off river<br />

<strong>hydro</strong>power stations on the Orange<br />

River, Vanderkloof HEPP comprises<br />

two 120 MW Francis turb<strong>in</strong>e generators<br />

operated by ESKOM to provide<br />

peak load power and ensure network<br />

stability. VA TECH HYDRO was<br />

awarded a contract to design, manufacture<br />

and supply two complete sets<br />

of stator w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs and auxiliary materials.<br />

Also, VA TECH HYDRO <strong>tech</strong>nical<br />

advisors will oversee the roundthe-clock<br />

erection work. The goals of<br />

the project <strong>in</strong>clude us<strong>in</strong>g state-ofthe-art<br />

<strong>tech</strong>nology to solve <strong>in</strong>herent<br />

partial discharge problems and the<br />

renewal stator w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs that are now<br />

reach<strong>in</strong>g the end of their design lifetime.<br />

This project is unique due to the<br />

new constellation of partners and<br />

customers, with VA TECH HYDRO<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g together with ROTEK<br />
