ENGLISH<br />

DR. JORDAN, Chairperson<br />

<strong>The</strong> English Department <strong>of</strong>fers courses in literature, theatre, writing, film, pedagogy, and theory.<br />

Courses are designated as English (ENGL), <strong>The</strong>atre (THTR), and Writing (WRTG) and are described<br />

below under these groupings. In addition to the major in English, the department <strong>of</strong>fers minors in English,<br />

in <strong>The</strong>atre, and in Writing. English majors may if they wish pursue either minors or tracks in <strong>The</strong>atre and<br />

Writing. English majors pursuing tracks in Writing or <strong>The</strong>atre may place these courses in either the elective<br />

or cognate area <strong>of</strong> the major. English majors pursuing minors in Writing or <strong>The</strong>atre may place these courses<br />

in the cognate area <strong>of</strong> the major; courses used for a minor may not apply to requirements or electives within<br />

the major or within another minor.<br />

ENGLISH MAJOR. <strong>The</strong> student majoring in English must take ENGL 140 (English Inquiry), and twelve<br />

other courses designated ENGL, THTR, or WRTG Six <strong>of</strong> these courses must satisfy six area requirements:<br />

A. British Literature: Medieval and Renaissance (ENGL 134, 139, 164, 165, 219, 226, 323, 335)<br />

B. British Literature: Restoration and Eighteenth Century (ENGL 244, 245)<br />

C. British Literature: Romantic and Victorian (ENGL 264, 371, 372, HUM 286)<br />

D. American Literature to 1865 (ENGL 324, 325, 326, 330, 344)<br />

E. Modern British Literature (ENGL 334, 336, 364)<br />

F. American Literature 1865-Present (ENGL 331, 332, 424, 425, 426, 427, 444)<br />

To satisfy this requirement, students must complete one course from each area. Students are urged to fill<br />

these area requirements sequentially. <strong>The</strong> English major may take <strong>The</strong>atre and/or Writing courses in the cognate<br />

but a particular course may not be listed in both the major and the cognate.<br />

THEATRE TRACK. Completion <strong>of</strong> this track will be noted on the English Major's transcript. <strong>The</strong> student must<br />

complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> 15 credits. Courses counted toward the track include any course designated with the<br />

THTR. prefix as well as WRTG 215, 217, and 315, and ENGL 134, 222, 223, 226, 245, 335, 384, and 427.<br />

WRITING TRACK. Completion <strong>of</strong> this track will be noted on the English Major's transcript. <strong>The</strong> student must<br />

complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> 15 credits designated with the WRTG. prefix and numbered at the 200 level or above.<br />

Including at least one course in Creative Writing (WRTG 213, 214, 215, 216, 217, 313, 314, 315, 316) and one in<br />

Applied Writing (WRTG 210, 211, 212).<br />

ENGLISH MINOR. To minor in English the student must take a minimum <strong>of</strong> 18 credits. One introductory<br />

class must be taken (ENGL 102, 103, 104, 140, 202, 203, 205 or 206). <strong>The</strong> remaining fifteen credits must be<br />

taken in courses that would satisfy area or elective requirements in the English major; i.e. no introductory courses<br />

may be included in these fifteen credits.<br />

THEATRE MINOR. To minor in <strong>The</strong>atre the student must take a minimum <strong>of</strong> 18 credits. Three courses are<br />

required: 1) THTR 110, 111, and THTR 211 or 212. Elective courses counted toward the minor include any<br />

course designated with the THTR prefix as well as WRTG 215, 217, and 315. One elective may be ENGL 104,<br />

134, 223, 226, 245, 335, 384, 422, or 427.<br />

WRITING MINOR. To minor in Writing the student must take a minimum <strong>of</strong> 18 credits in courses designated<br />

with the WRTG prefix and numbered at the 200 level or above. At least one course is required in Creative<br />

Writing (WRTG 213, 214, 215, 216, 217, 313, 314, 315, 316) and in Applied Writing (WRTG 210, 211, 212).<br />

Introduction to Literature 3 credits<br />

An exploration <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> prose fiction, poetry,<br />

and drama. <strong>The</strong> emphasis is critical rather than<br />

historical. <strong>The</strong> range <strong>of</strong> works and the specific<br />

selections may vary with the individual instructor.<br />

ENGL 102 Staff<br />

(C)Introduction to Fiction 3 credits<br />

An exploration <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> prose fiction, its<br />

elements and techniques. <strong>The</strong> emphasis is critical<br />

rather than historical. <strong>The</strong> range <strong>of</strong> works and the<br />

specific selections may vary with the individual<br />

instructor.<br />

ENGL 103 Staff<br />

(C)Introduction to Poetry 3 credits<br />

An exploration <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> poetry, its value,<br />

aims and techniques. <strong>The</strong> emphasis will be critical<br />

rather than historical. <strong>The</strong> range <strong>of</strong> poems and the<br />

specific selections will be the choice <strong>of</strong> the individual<br />

instructor.<br />

ENGL 104 Staff<br />

(C)Introduction to Drama 3 credits<br />

An exploration <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> drama, its types,<br />

techniques, and conventions. <strong>The</strong> emphasis will be<br />

critical rather than historical. <strong>The</strong> range <strong>of</strong> plays<br />

and the specific selections may vary with the individual<br />

instructor. This course may be counted<br />

toward the theatre minor.<br />
