REV. HANLEY AWARD—This award is named for the late Dexter Hanley, S.J., Esq., former<br />

<strong>University</strong> President. Aid from this fund is granted to nieces and nephews <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Jesuit personnel.<br />

SARKIS R. HAZZOURI, JR., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP—This fund was established<br />

in 1997 to assist incoming freshmen from Lackawanna County. First preference is given to<br />

graduates <strong>of</strong> West <strong>Scranton</strong> High School who intend to enroll in the School <strong>of</strong> Management.<br />

REV. WILLIAM B. HILL, S.J., SCHOLARSHIP FUND—This fund was established to<br />

honor Fr. Hill by his sister, Gerardine C. Hill. Since 1969, Fr. Hill has served in several administrative<br />

positions at the U. <strong>of</strong> S. including assistant to the president.<br />

THE HILL NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION/PETER CHEUNG AWARD—This fund<br />

was named for Peter Cheung, who died in an accident while an undergraduate. Awards are<br />

given to a junior or senior who has demonstrated service to the neighborhood and the<br />

<strong>University</strong> community. Preference is given to residents <strong>of</strong> the City <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>’s Hill<br />

Neighborhood.<br />

THE HOESCHELE-STEINMETZ AWARD—This fund was established by General<br />

Electric in honor <strong>of</strong> David B. Hoeschele, an alumnus <strong>of</strong> the class <strong>of</strong> 1950. Mr. Hoeschele was<br />

chosen by G.E. for a prestigious award for his leadership in the field <strong>of</strong> electronic circuit<br />

design. He then requested the funds be used to establish an award for United States citizens or<br />

permanent residents from Northeastern Pennsylvania. <strong>The</strong> recipient should be enrolled as a fulltime<br />

undergraduate in either the Physics or Electronic Engineering program. This award is<br />

based on need and academic merit.<br />

THE ROBERT V. HORGER SCHOLARSHIP FUND—This fund was established by<br />

Robert V. Horger, a prominent <strong>Scranton</strong> banker. It is given without respect to geography to<br />

qualified students from the incoming freshman class who demonstrate financial need.<br />

GEORGE RONALD HOLMES, PH.D., SCHOLARSHIP—Dr. Holmes and his wife started<br />

this award to provide aid to junior and senior psychology majors.<br />

THE FRANK AND JEAN HUBBARD AWARD—This fund was established through a<br />

generous gift from Frank and Jean Hubbard. It is for graduates from North Pocono High School<br />

in the top 25% <strong>of</strong> the class who have financial need. It is expected that the recipient will take a<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> fifteen credits each semester.<br />

ITT AWARD—<strong>The</strong> International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation established this<br />

award fund to encourage students to pursue academic excellence. <strong>The</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Admissions<br />

annually selects an incoming freshman to receive the award, which is renewable based on academic<br />

achievement.<br />

THE JESUIT COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP—Substantial annual gifts from the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> Jesuit Community have made possible an endowment to provide unrestricted<br />

scholarship aid to deserving students. Most awards are based on financial need and academic<br />

achievement.<br />

THE JETHRO SCHOLARSHIP—Established by a <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> faculty member,<br />

Dr. Everett R. Brown, the grant is awarded to a freshman Management, Marketing or<br />

Economics/Finance major who demonstrates he or she has earned a significant amount <strong>of</strong> total<br />

college expenses. It is not dependent upon financial status <strong>of</strong> parents, nor high school grades.<br />

Available for four years, as long as the recipient maintains a grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.00 or better.<br />

B. CARL JONES MEMORIAL AWARD—This fund was established in 1988 by family,<br />

friends and colleagues <strong>of</strong> the late B. Carl Jones, a <strong>University</strong> trustee and benefactor. <strong>The</strong> fund<br />

provides financial assistance, based on need, to students from Lackawanna County who are<br />

enrolled in the School <strong>of</strong> Management.<br />

THE FRANCIS J. KEARNEY AWARD—A 1977 gift from a retired pharmacist, followed<br />

by a bequest in 1979, made possible this award fund to assist deserving students in need <strong>of</strong><br />

financial aid.<br />

KOCH-CONLEY AMERICAN LEGION AWARD—Established in 1985 by agreement<br />

with the American Legion, these awards are provided on the basis <strong>of</strong> academic achievement<br />

and financial need. First preference is given to family members and grandchildren <strong>of</strong> the members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Koch-Conley American Legion Post 121. <strong>The</strong>reafter, family members <strong>of</strong> other<br />

Pennsylvania American Legion Post members may be considered.<br />
