Water may be available as ground water or as surface water either on-farm (ground water, water
basins) or off-farm (rivers, canals). Sometimes water from public water supply networks is used.
Studying the figures for irrigation methods and sources in general (Table 21), it is clear that most often
sprinklers are used to irrigate fields. In the southern countries surface irrigation also takes an
important part. Ground water is the dominating source for water in the northern countries. More to the
south surface water and water from water supply networks is used.
