Foreword
Art as Brain Recovery
Andrea Gellin Shindler
Founder Executive Director, Foundation for Human Potential,
Chicago, IL.
Having learned of Ruth Resch’s extraordinary story and work from Dr.
Martha Taylor Sarno, I was immediately taken by her remarkable artwork,
in the face of stroke-related, brain damage.
Ruth Resch was and is a fighter, determined to communicate in the best
way possible, showing that artistic expression is her mode.
Having had experience with a young female patient, years ago, who had
had a similar experience, I developed the Foundation for Human Potential
to share the influence of alternative means of communication, in so doing,
advocating strongly for the arts/artistic expression—a most positive channel
for rehabilitation.
Books from prominent authors which have developed to support the
notion that positive rehabilitation is an ongoing process, include: Begley, S.
Train Your Brain, Change Your Mind; Schwartz, M., Begley, S. The Mind and
the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force; Doidge, N. The
Brain the Changes Itself; LeDoux, J. The Emotional Brain; Caplan, L. Striking
Back at Stroke.
Bravo to Ruth Resch for teaching the world that rehabilitation can
be an idiosyncratic development, to which close attention must be paid.
Positive options for rehabilitation will, thereby, ensue for the betterment of
rehabilitation for all individuals.
